Queens of the Stone Age is a rock band from Palm Desert, California, United States. The band is frequently labeled stoner rock, although they reject the label. They developed a style of riff-oriented, heavy music which the band's founder and mastermind Josh Homme described as "robot rock", saying that he "wanted to create a heavy sound based on a solid jam, just pound it into your head". Since then, their sound has evolved to incorporate a variety of different styles and influences.
While in high school, Homme got together with locals Brant Bjork, Chris Cockrell (later replaced by Nick Oliveri) and John Garcia resulting in the formation of Kyuss (firstly known as "Sons of Kyuss"). Queens of the Stone Age formed in 1997, rising from the ashes of Kyuss and began playing together during the now legendary Desert Sessions. Homme has drawn all of the members from that diverse group of musicians for Queens of the Stone Age. The band originally formed under the name Gamma Ray, but almost faced a lawsuit from the European metal band of the same name.
Queens of the Stone Age have gone through many line-up changes since first breaking into the hard rock scene. Their most recent line-up includes: Josh Homme (guitar, vocals), Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar, lap steel, keyboards, backing vocals), Jon Theodore (drums, percussion), Michael Shuman (bass, backing vocals), and Dean Fertita (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals).
Former core members include Joey Castillo, Alain Johannes, Natasha Shneider, Mark Lanegan, and Nick Oliveri, among other members and contributors. In 2002, regarding the band line-up, Homme said: "It really is more of a musical experiment… It keeps moving and reinventing itself. That way we never get painted into a corner."
Dave Grohl recorded drums, percussion and backing vocals on Songs for the Deaf and toured in support of the album in 2002 before returning to the Foo Fighters. Grohl also made a live appearance in 2007, to play Make It wit Chu, and recorded tracks on …Like Clockwork, following Joey Castillo's departure.
Mark Lanegan has long been an on/off vocalist for the band, toured from 2001 to 2005 and made live appearances in 2007 and 2010. He has recorded with the band on all albums except for their self-titled debut album. Lanegan has also played keyboards in live performances during the tour preceding the release of Lullabies to Paralyze, before Natasha Shneider joined the band.
Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri were seen as the only two consistent Queens of the Stone Age members. Oliveri had previously played alongside Homme in the band Kyuss and joined Queens of the Stone Age as its permanent bass guitarist and co-lead vocalist, in 1998, upon the release of its debut album, Queens of the Stone Age. Being friends since childhood, the two meshed well together. Oliveri's punk background brought an element of danger and attitude to the Queens' live shows. As the band's two core members, the duo recorded the breakthrough albums, Rated R and Songs for the Deaf, together. Oliveri's unique "howling" singing style made him easily distinguishable on songs such as Six Shooter from the album Songs for the Deaf; he also displays a more melodic singing style in Rated R songs such as Auto Pilot.
However, Homme fired Oliveri in 2004 for excessive partying and an alleged incident of domestic abuse (an accusation which Oliveri strongly denies). The duo repaired their friendship shortly afterwards. Oliveri, however, did not return to the band. In 2013, upon hearing that former contributor Dave Grohl was recording drums for the band's sixth studio album, …Like Clockwork, Oliveri asked Homme if he too could return on bass guitar. Homme ultimately did not grant Oliveri's request. He does, however, appear on backing vocals on the album track, If I Had a Tail.

The Evil Has Landed
Queens of the Stone Age Lyrics
Going on a living spree
Plenty wanna come with me
You don't wanna miss your chance
Near-life experience
Faces making noise
Say, be good girls and boys
It ain't half empty or full
You can break the glass, or drink it all
Dig it
Close
Come close
Close
Come close
A glamour cabaret
The last float on parade
'Cause their swing got left behind
Every puzzle piece of mind
Handshake in facade
Play the fool or playing God
Just for God's sake play along
Well, you can have a laugh, hit it
Du-du-du-du-duah
Duuu-du-dudu
Du-du-du-du-duah
Du-du-du-duu-du-dudu
Duuu-du-dudu
Dive in
Falling no different
I am far beyond definitions now

Close
Come close
Go on a living spree
You really wanna come with me
They couldn't miss the chance
Near-life experience
Move on
We're all entangled
Oh oh, let the man go
Yeah, unfold, let it go
Yeah, unfold, let it go
Yeah, unfold, let it go
Yeah, unfold, let it go
Here we come
Here we come
Here we come
Here we come
Get outta the way
Here we come
Get outta the way
Matters not
What the people say
Matters not
What the people say
'Cause here we come
Here we come
Here we come
Get outta the way, yeah

@Steve Alcantara again - Now that I'm listening, I'm in the mood for more. This is a purely subjective list, but here are my favourite tracks from each album, in order from first to last.
1. The self titled album. "You Would Know." Homme's lyrics are off in space, with warped fx on the vocals. "Me just happy robot, live on hill of beans..." Such a great opening line, and it gets better. https://youtu.be/uX8CagHpyQw
2. Rated R. "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer" and "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" are the best known tracks, but the one that really gets its hooks in me is "Better Living Through Chemistry." Monstrously hypnotic and psychedelic, but with loads of groove. https://youtu.be/WVE90vGS9ps
3. Songs For The Deaf. "No One Knows" took them from the fringes and threw them into mainstream consciousness. Not top of the charts or anything, but they were suddenly more than "that weird band", they had a hit that was starting to turn heads. For me though, among an album chock full of really solid work, it's the title track. Thundering, aggressive, spooky, just all around fucked up and nasty, yet still full of really catchy hooks and harmonies. A royal fucking masterpiece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXGcr7gfU-I
4. Lullabies To Paralyze. My favourite has always been "I Never Came." It's the calm before the storm. The storm being tracks 9-12. The slow spooky breakdown of "Someone's in the Wolf" with the sound of knives being sharpened bladed to blade. The complete madness of the carnival music that opens "The Blood Is Love" before it drops into an absolutely gigantic riff with some of Homme's finest lyricism, and some crazy playing from drummer Joey Castillo, where he throws the downbeats and offbeats around, always in time, but changing the mood in unexpected ways. Then into "Skin on Skin", a distorted, mangled, old beast with twisted breakdowns that rival early Butthole Surfers in their unabashed filth and swagger. Finally, "Broken Box" that kicks into overdrive right off the bat, a great big shameless shake your ass singalong. The closing tracks wind you back down, and they're great too, but those 4 songs in a row are absolute magic. Still, it's #8 that really pushes my buttons, for it's beauty. It's pretty much their first real ballad, and it shows off his depth as a writer, how he can go from these huge aggressive numbers, then suddenly show such tenderness. He says it in interviews, he likes his songs to show dynamics, not just in terms of audio engineering, but in their emotion too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z33MyzOwjHE&list=OLAK5uy_lIUuVa7smXo2ZHfeGPNbtAY-HNahnn4H4
5. Era Vulgaris. This motherfucking album. I was waiting outside the doors of the record store 10 minutes before opening on the day it was released. I had smoked some weed, and I was amped as hell to hear it. The doors opened, I grabbed my copy, went directly home, sparked up again, and put the headphones on. I listened to literally nothing else for almost 6 months. I was completely blown away by everything on it. It drew a lot of criticism, people whined about it sounding robotic, having synthesisers, and so on, but I loved it for that. It was still them, but it was wild and brand new, and I just could not get enough of it. So much amazing stuff on this album - I'm Designer, Misfit Love, River In The Road, Run Pig Run, Era Vulgaris, and bonus track The Fun Machine Took a Shit and Died, but my favourite is Battery Acid. It bolts right out of the gate, and despite a stupidly lush chorus, just keeps on charging non-stop from go to woah. Total madness, so much fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEbNmK-rNuQ&list=PL737831582713C57A&index=6
6. Like Clockwork. This is a strange and dark album. Homme was in hospital and due to some complications, was actually technically dead for a few moments, but the doctors managed to bring him back. The return to writing was a long and slow road, but by god, the work that he put out after that experience was a whole new level. I'll break a bit here, as the title track "Like Clockwork" is actually my favourite, but this is the one that drew me in, as it was the first teaser released, so it got me amped as I waited for the full release. The album version is longer, but this edit is stunning, and the video is just magnificent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9OfBcjyxKY
7. Villains. The latest album. Just amazing from start to finish, but for me - Especially the finish. Closing track "Villains of Circumstance" is just the most beautiful thing I've ever heard by them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsqhJcGbaEI&list=PLjy-vFP7g3WAlm2TWhUg-vUePooeZKV1k&index=9
I hope you find even half the pleasure in listening through their collection as I do. They're my favourite band in the world, hands down.

@Steve Alcantara In my opinion, the "best" Qotsa album is the last one that came out, and then each time a new one appears, the "best" album changes. For me, the greatest thing about them is that they are always looking for something new. There's a familiarity in their tone and attitude, but there's always something different with each new album. If you like a band that hates to sit still, then they're a great choice. That said though, you should still go back to the start, and listen to the whole body of work as it progresses. After all, the new album only exists because they took all of those previous steps. A lot of people are stuck on the idea that "Songs For The Deaf" was their pinnacle, and nothing after was ever as good, and blah blah bullshit, but I disagree 100%. That album is so far away from the first 2, it only ever came about because they did something new. If all Qotsa ever did was repeat themselves, that album would never have happened. Their constant evolution is their greatest strength.
Other great Josh Homme projects / collabs...
Them Crooked Vultures - Homme, Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones from Led Zep. Still very much a Queens sound though. My favourite is "Bandoliers." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g3fckxdvZM
Desert Sessions - Homme recruits a bunch of other musicians and they all go on a 2-3 week retreat to his ranch in the desert, and make an album that's pretty much improvised, although he brings in some old ideas that have been kicking around and never quite found their place yet. My favourite is the b-side from the "Crawl Home" single from Vol. 9-10. Featuring Homme, Dean Ween, PJ Harvey, Twiggy Ramirez, and others, all doing a cover of Prince. A bunch of freaks covering a freak. https://youtu.be/QQGbRBLqnNU
Unkle - War Stories. Homme appears in a few places on the album, and his sound is clearly recognizable, but it's "Restless" that steals the show for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igRcOdtfQsM
Happy listening.

Are there really people that are taking issue with this album? I think it's brilliant.
Also, Josh is a fucking fantastic lyricist

Josh isn't just good with lyric, he a good preformer over all. I genuinely think he has one of the best voices I've ever heard and the style of music he involves himself with is amazing
