Now consisting of Rosanne Machado (vocals/acoustic guitars/banjo), Thomas Kossar (electric guitars), Guilherme Miranda (bass guitars) and Tiago Barbosa (drums/perc), the band continues to blend in sweet, introspective lyrics with catchy melodies and soft female vocals.
In terms of production and musical growth, the EP reveals the development of the group in several aspects: from the cover art – a bird standing over a whale’s tale – to the much richer and more varied arrangements. “Come Back” and “Old Folks (New Year)”, which are familiar songs to those who have followed the band from the beginning, were recorded again, this time with additional guitars, bass and percussion, without losing their original charm and simplicity.
The early material evolved and three new songs emerged. The first of them – “Bonfires” – carries a “feel good” atmosphere that can get your feet moving nonstop, thanks to the ukulele, whistles and claps on the background. “Bird and Whale” is the second most uplifting tune on the EP – it starts with a quick harmonica intro and then falls into a cheerful beat and vibrant acoustic guitars. Finally, “Darkest Horse” shows a more obscure side of Rosanne’s songwriting and is lead by a brushed snare drum and haunting acoustic guitars.
Overall, “Bird and Whale” will win new fans over at the first listen, and won’t disappoint old enthusiasts that are expecting something outstandingly refreshing coming from Rosie and Me.
