The album was produced by John O'Mahony, Kurt Uenala, Mark Endert and Bareilles herself and in spots is more experimental in sound than her past recordings. The album was recorded in early 2013 in Los Angeles and at the Electric Lady Studios in New York City.
The album is the follow-up to 2010's Kaleidoscope Heart which has nearly gone gold.

You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody's lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle 'neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
Everybody's been there, everybody's been stared down
By the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
But don't run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
Innocence, your history of silence
Won't do you any good
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don't you tell them the truth?
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
See you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
The song "Brave" by Sara Bareilles is an anthem for those who have felt held back by fear and uncertainty. The lyrics encourage listeners to be authentic and speak their truth, even when it feels scary to do so. The opening lines suggest that each person has the power to be amazing and influence others. The following lines recognize that it can be challenging to express oneself honestly, especially if one has experienced rejection or lack of love in the past. However, the chorus encourages listeners to take a risk and let their words "fall out" without holding back.
The second verse acknowledges that everyone has faced challenges and adversity in their lives. Many people have been made to feel small by others or felt trapped in their personal "cage." However, the song encourages listeners to stop holding back and start speaking up for themselves. The bridge emphasizes that staying silent or conforming to others' expectations won't lead to growth or fulfillment. Instead, the lyrics urge listeners to be truthful and authentic with their words and actions.
Overall, "Brave" is a powerful and uplifting song that encourages self-expression and authenticity. It reminds listeners to be confident in who they are and not let fear hold them back from living a life that reflects their true selves.
