I was so hoping you’d do a tutorial on this technique! I just ordered the sheet music and your CD (download). I can’t wait to learn all the fingerings so I can play - and eventually sing/play this gorgeous music. And, of course, I will be saving up for a Adri Dream tenor (and soprano) as well. I love the sound of the Renaissance recorders.

I had my second recorder lesson last week so learned all the lower register C major fingerings. I sat down last night and played through this for the first time. So Much Fun!! But - Boy! I have a lot of work ahead of me, especially since each of the two lowest notes on my tenor sound almost like two notes are playing - I'm sure I'm not covering the holes well enough yet. And I need to practice breath control for sure.But on the plus side, my roommate told me I sounded beautiful (even with all the mistakes). I can't wait to play it better. And it will be a long while before I can sing and play at the same time, but it is beautiful just playing the tenor line. Thank you for this beautiful arrangement!

Oh my! I was so intrigued, I downloaded the music to play with one day, but had a few minutes, so put it on the stand. This is so much fun even to try! I am not a singer, but . . . the recorder helps to get the notes, along with a tuner. I tried playing along with the notes and a bit of the drone idea (hard to stay on one note!). There were some very cool sounding moments, and afterward, I played part of another piece I am practicing and my playing was better! The voice/instrument combo seems to encourage good breathwork. Thanks for the breath marks - I do need them. I'm really looking forward to trying more of this. What a lovely piece of music.

You can try the Adri's Dream tenors by Mollenhauer - much cheaper than a handmade renaissance one, and they make a nice approach to the wide, open sound. I recommend!

blue penguin Far too expensive for me, especially when I seem to favour the most expensive woods. I’ve yet to find a place that sells them in my country, so even if I find a “cheap” one it would cost me twice as much in import charges alone😭 Basic plastic tenors are ridiculously expensive here so anything more fancy than that burns quite the hole in your wallet.

If I ever win the lottery I shall buy one then😂

Hi Sarah... do you practice (memorise) all scales in every key so you can transpose and change key at will? Coming from a guitar background this seems waaaaaay more difficult on the recorder!

Dear Sarah, I did the same thing with my organ and cornet. That is also playing with my breath and fingers (and feet of course) simultaneously. I call that "playing corgel". It's not the same as playing recorder and singing together, but it has interfaces clearly. It cost me a lot of practice also. Here you have an example of it: youtu.be/1Matehr7R21. I have also tried to instruct brass players/organists how to do that, but most of them give up after some effort. I hope you have more success with your students.

Good question! I would pitch it in the highest octave that's comfortable for your voice. It can help to blow lots of air (to give a strong recorder sound) and make a mellow, softer tone with your voice in order to create a good balance. If you have a bass recorder, you can also play it on that with the same fingerings, then it all sounds a fifth lower!

Aha! When I first tried it, I was also wondering if Sarah blows a part of the air past the recorder, because the mouth piece is different! Thanks for sharing! Does it work for you for the higher notes when you need to overblow?

@André I've found if I sort of - and I hope I can explain this clearly enough! - have about a third of my mouth not around the fipple of the recorder (so I put the recorder to my mouth, but leave a small gap), then that seems to stop the buzzing. Also, doing it on the right instrument! I was doing it on my alto, but this piece goes up to a high G in the voice part, and i just can't sing that high. So i played it on the tenor and it sounded muuchh better, because it fit way better with my natural voice range.

Same here. Any luck or insights so far? For me, the result varies with singing pitch (d works OK'ish on a tenor, but higher notes don't) and flute (low d tin whistle works better than recorder, but I can't overblow when the singing).
