Gifts From Heaven by Shoshannah
New Age Retailer Magazine
We live in a world of tremendous complexity. A world of multi-voiced synthesizers and forty-eight track recording studios. A world where albums come mixed and layered and processed and homogenized like Wonder Bread. And then there's Shoshannah. Solo piano. Simple. Powerful. Tender. Exquisitely melodic. Listening to her Gifts from Heaven I am reminded of how soul-satisfying and moving a beautiful melody can be in the hands of a gifted pianist/composer. You can feel the love in every note. Gifts from Heaven is healing, G-d infused music.
Conceived in Israel, several of the thirteen pieces are based on ancient Hebrew melodies. All of the tracks have a balm-like quality to them: soothing, nurturing, and bringing a deep sense of peace and fulfillment. Shoshannah's music evokes a classical old world beauty. It's elegant simplicity is the loving outpouring of a pure soul. The composer is a servant of the Divine.
Shoshannah writes in her liner notes, "These melodies are filled with the message of love from Heaven's gates. They radiate light, joy, thankfulness, and praise. Close your eyes, listen, hum, sing, dance, and let music's splendor embrace your soul and lighten your heart."
Excellent for in-store play. Gifts from Heaven is ideally suited for meditation and body work as well as for driving, dancing, and creating. Give yourself the gift of experiencing it.

GIFTS FROM HEAVEN BY SHOSHANNAH
In a recent email from the pianist Shoshannah, she wrote the following description of how Gifts from Heaven came about. "The main point is that I became a "klee"/vessel for the music to come on through me which was the gift from heaven I received. 95% of the work on Gifts from Heaven was getting myself and my ego out of the way and allowing the music to come divinely through me. The quality of the music contains the essence of what I am saying." What I'll offer in addition to her words is my opinion that this album would make a wonderful addition to your new age solo piano collection if you enjoy warm engaging music that, while accessible, never becomes too sing-songy, poppish, or commercial. Shoshannah walks the tightrope between the flowing romanticism of, e.g., Robin Spielberg or Suzanne Ciani and the more impressionistic recordings of artists such as David Nevue or Catherine Marie Charlton. Gifts from Heaven is inviting and easy to enjoy yet also offers a subtle depth of complexity; it grows on you with each playing, revealing nuances that you may have missed the first time around. Add in the fact that the melodies themselves are enchanting and lovely (and for the most part, low-key and unforceful) and you end up with a CD which is the perfect background accompaniment for late in the evening but not at the expense of being too minimal.
The emotional inspiration for this recording came during the artist's visit to Jerusalem. Nine of the thirteen tracks are originals by the artist. Two are melodies composed by Reb Shlomo Carlebach (although the arrangements of these pieces are Shoshannah's) and two numbers which originated as traditional melodies were used as "springboards" and then the artist took them in new directions. The overall tone and mood of the album is consistent throughout with the only prominent deviation being shifts in tempo between selections (almost all are either slow or midtempo, though). Overall recording volume is soft and subdued, but still remarkably clear with solid stereo imaging.
The album opens with the rolling chords and a balance of cheeriness and stateliness on "Partners in Creation" which leads into the flowing reflective mood of "Gathering the Sparks," a tune which reminded me of Bill Douglas' many fine recordings (sans his usual accompanying woodwind playing). This track exemplifies Shoshannah's ability to impart a wistfulness in her music even when the time signature is faster than one might expect for such an evocation. "Surrender to One" is lovely, cast in the same mold as classic "gentle" new age piano music through the years, as is "Blessing of Peace" (one of the quietest and most subdued pieces on the album),
Another element I especially enjoyed about Gifts from Heaven was its economical song length. Six tracks clock in at under three minutes and that's a rarity in this genre (unfortunately). The shorter duration makes the diversity song-to-song stand out, but by keeping the overall vibe consistent, the net result makes the album sound fresh each time one hears it.
From the delicate "A Woman's Gift," to the warmly nostalgic album closer, "Come Home to Me," to the spirited and romantic "Devoted Companion," Shoshannah guides the listener with both her deft touch (she has superb control of nuance) and her soulful spirit. Gifts from Heaven is a true "gift" to new age piano music fans and I strongly recommend seeking it out, especially if you're tired of mundane overly slick productions.

Gifts From Heaven by Shoshannah
A lovely collection of solo piano compositions "in praise of the Infinite Light" rises above the crowd here. Though there is nothing but the single voice of the piano, this release fills your space with richness in the same way an empty room suddenly overflows with children's laughter. These pure melodies, with titles like "Blessing of Peace" and "Divine Embrace", are clearly spiritually inspired, firmly within the New Age genre, but Shoshannah's classical background is readily apparent. She writes in her liner notes, "these melodies are filled with the message of love from heaven's gates. They radiate light, joy, thankfulness, and praise. " Frankly, after listening, you'll probably agree
