This was released two hours after THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, the eleventh album, was released on platforms. Fans see this album as a deluxe or extended version of the eleventh, but chronologically in her discography it is identified as an independent brother of the eleventh.
This same album was released as a surprise after a countdown that the artist kept on social networks, here, Swift maintains the story that began with the previous album giving it a similar narrative only that in this one, the narrator tells the story between its metaphors in a more surreal, disconcerting and cathartically frustrating way (in a good way, it is up to interpretation). The album features a total of 14 tracks including those from its predecessor album bringing the length to 2hrs2mins with a total of 31 tracks.
Upon its release, critical reception was mixed, initially reviews were balanced between negative and positive, with some highlighting “a lack of sincerity in the project” and others highlighting its “cathartic composition and emotional resonance”. Among them, the length of the album was also resonant, saying that it was too long and that the project lacked depth. After this, the specialized critics were questioned and their transparency was questioned for focusing on the artist's public image rather than the artistic merit of the album, as most reviews were written in less time than the duration of the album itself.
Subsequent reviews after digesting the album changed radically, some who saw the project as “Swift’s worst work to date” retracted appreciating its musical and lyrical nuances saying that this project was one of the most sophisticated of the singer’s career, also calling it a milestone and an album par excellence that contains several of Swift’s best songs.
Although the criticism was polarized by the specialized media, Rolling Stones magazine included it in its list of The Best Albums of 2024 at number 23th.
“Taylor Swift might be the self-proclaimed “Chairman of the Tortured Poets Department,” but judging by these songs, business is booming. Even by Swiftian standards, she gets wildly ambitious with her songwriting here. Tortured Poets has the intimate sound of Folklore and Evermore, but with a coating of Midnights synth-pop gloss. The songs go for that detailed Folkmore style of storycraft, yet instead of fictional characters, she’s pouring her heart into her own deeply personal exorcisms.” —R.S.
The album broke several sales and streaming records, regionally and worldwide. It achieved the most streams in a single day and in a single week for an album on Spotify, and topped the charts in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas.
