This appears to be a comprehensive discography of all known studio recordings plus a bunch of live tracks (about half of the CD) from this extremely cult Canadian band. Punk was a new concept in 1977-78, when The Action were doing their thing up in the Great White North, and like many bands of that period (particularly those who weren’t in London or Los Angeles), they were doing their own thing and could just as easily be described as a rock ‘n’ roll band—the ‘punk’ tag isn’t entirely inappropriate, but isn’t completely accurate, either. To my ears, The Action is in a grey area of garage rock ala Flamin’ Groovies and New York Dolls, which is to say that there are punk-friendly elements, but there are also moments of pure English 60s rock (which is to say that they are extremely influenced by that American blues rock ‘n’ roll sound, particularly in the area of lengthy, jam-based guitar solos). This is a nice time-capsule discovery, but unless you actually remember this band or you can’t get enough of good-but-not-great 70s-style garage rock, it’s hardly essential. The Impaler
