The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane
The Ames Brothers Lyrics

The naughty lady of Shady Lane has hit the town like a bomb
The back fence gossip ain't been this good since Mabel ran off with Tom
Our town was peaceful and quiet before she came on the scene
The lady has started a riot, disturbin' the suburban routine

The naughty lady of Shady Lane has the town in a whirl.
The naughty lady of Shady Lane. Me, oh my, oh what a girl!

You should see how she carries on with her admirants galore
She must be giving them quite a thrill, the way they flock to her door.
She throws those "come hither" glances at every Tom, Dick and Joe
When offered some liquid refreshment, the lady never, never says, "No."

The naughty lady of Shady Lane has the town in a whirl.
The naughty lady of Shady Lane. Me, oh my, oh what a girl!

The things they're trying to pin on her won't hold much water, I'm sure.
Beneath the powder and fancy lace, there beats a heart sweet and pure.
She just needs someone to change her and she'll be nice as can be.
If you're in the neighborhood, stranger, you're welcome to drop in and see

The naughty lady of Shady Lane, so delightful to hold
The naughty lady of Shady Lane. So delectable, quite respectable.
And she's only nine days old!

LOL. Until I was in my 50's I thought the Naughty Lane was about a woman of ill-repute. racked me up when I paid attention and realized that it was about an infant!

"And she's only 9 days old" didn't tip you off ;P I first heard the Dean Martin version of the song so was waiting for the twist but never predicted it would be about an infant. Love this song!

@dennis price - me too I was in my early 30s in the late 90s and my ex-girlfriend gave me a Dean Martin CD which included it before I paid attention and realised the "naughty lady" was a baby!

@Dr Dimento I Googled Mitch Miller discography, which shows all the albums, singles, EPs, and miscellaneous. I don't find anything about a Valerie song (maybe this was within a song with a different title?): https://www.discogs.com/artist/361544-Mitch-Miller?page=1

@Gia Brainerd oh for sure. and the way Mitch directed wit his hands down low and arms out was so distinctive. I can still hear the songs and sing them. i have this like unbelievable memory. i can even see the lyrics pages that came with the album and the lyrics themselves. love that era. what i wouldn't give to go back and snack on a slice of that pie again. i ate it too fast the first time. during the 60's i prided myself in knowing not only the name of the hit song on a record, but what was on the flip side and what label the record was under. kids used to come to me and ask such trivia. hehehehe. a walking encyclopedia. heck, i read the american encyclopedia by the time i graduated HS for fun. but more entertaining was "The Rise and Fall of the Third Riecht." Wow what a piece of work that book was. i finished it over the summer before the start of high school. amazing message in that book.

@Dr Dimento I'm sorry; I can't say that I remember that one in particular. I remember watching Sing Along With Mitch, hearing him on the radio, and that we had at least one album of his. It's more of a visceral memory than remembering actual songs or lyrics. It was a very distinctive sound and one that I connect with a pleasant and comfortable childhood.

This song has been embedded in my subconscious since I was little.  So, fifty or so years later, I've had three wonderful grandsons, and now in 2015, a granddaughter!  Parts of this song have filtered down into my brain, and yes, my granddaughter is "only NINE days old."  This beautiful song comes flooding back to me :)

I suddenly remembered this song when someone mentioned Kool Aid. I remember it coming on the radio in summer when we were under the willow tree drinking Kool Aid, lol. And I must have been four. Funny the things we associate with songs. Congrats on the grand daughter. I didn't remember the ending to the song.
