The pieces were used for folk dances, but also for ballads and more 'serious' concert pieces. The mixing of played and sung melodies was then common music practice. Playford played an important role in London music life as the publisher of many collections of dance music intended for various purposes (teaching materials, dance music, music for the court, etc.). A number of works from the above collection have been placed on this CD. The title of the CD refers to a trip to the town of Killburn (probably close to London, but there are also two towns with the same name in Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and the title of a well-known melody. The works are performed by The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble that has specialized in Renaissance music with great success. The CD booklet provides an extensive and fun explanation of the origin and background of the various pieces and the lyrics. Some titles are: "All in a garden green", "The French report", "The joviall broome man", "The famous ratcatcher" and "The beautiful sheperdess of Arcadia". (LW) _
