It was conceived by Allen Klein of Apple Records, who tasked Allan Steckler with putting together an album, since the Beatles were by that time no longer active. Steckler chose songs that had not previously appeared on a Capitol release for a variety of reasons. This means that, while the album covers material from throughout the Beatles' career, it emphasizes the later period, after Capitol began following the original UK releases more closely. The Beatles usually did not include their singles on albums, but Capitol had previously included most Beatles singles on their reconfigured US albums.
When the Beatles formalized their discography worldwide in the CD era, Hey Jude was not included as one of the group's core albums. It, therefore, went out of print for decades, finally being re-released as part of The U.S. Albums box set, as well as individually at the same time.
