Most of their early broadcasts were inexplicably deleted in the 80s (the same fate which befell early Fairport Convention broadcasts), and many of the remaining performances are from their lamentable No Ruinous Feud period. This, along with their On Air tapes from the end of their career - both of which are now available in the Across The Airwaves double CD, are the most important recordings in their live career.
This performance has the band performing unreleased songs and alternative arrangements of Liquid Acrobat songs (released with controversial production later that year), and shows they still had a large following in 1971. Occasional glimpses of their 60's heyday are what makes this stand out from others - it retains the intimacy and magic of their early years, including the suspicious mixed-media experimentation typical of Williamson. Here that's shown in the Willow Pattern performance, which he explains "tells the story of a willow pattern plate". Willow Pattern suffers a little for the lack of visuals (something Robin would learn to remedy in his remarkable solo career) but the rest of the performance requires only your ears and perhaps a fondness for Sacred Heart singing, which opens this concert.
