Angela
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you left this town, with your windows down
And the wilderness inside
Let the exits pass, all the tar and glass
'Til the road and sky align

The strangers in this town
They raise you up just to cut you down
Oh, Angela, it's a long time coming

When your Volvo lights lit up green and white
With the cities on the signs
But you held your course to some distant war
In the corners of your mind

From the second time around
The only love I ever found
Oh, Angela, it's a long time coming

Home at last

Were you safe and warm in your coat of arms
With your fingers in a fist?
Did you hear the notes, all those static codes
In the radio abyss?

Strangers in this town
They raise you up just to cut you down
Oh, Angela, it's a long time coming
Oh, Angela, spent your whole life running away

Home at last
Home at last

Vacancy, hotel room, lost in me, lost in you
Angela, on my knees, I belong, I believe

Home at last
Home at last
Home at last
Home at last

Home at last

Hmm-mmm-mmm
Hmm-mmm-mmm
Hmm
Hmm

Overall Meaning

The Lumineers' song "Angela" tells the story of a woman named Angela who leaves her town, driving away with her windows down and a wildness inside. She lets the exits pass by until the road and sky align. The strangers in the town raise her up just to cut her down, and the singer believes that Angela has been running her entire life. She drives a Volvo whose lights light up green and white with the cities on the signs. Despite the cities and warm coat of arms she may come across, she's headed towards war in the corner of her mind.

The second verse begins with the singer wondering if Angela has found any safety and warmth in her coat of arms with her fingers in a fist. He continues his pondering by questioning if she hears the notes and static codes in the radio abyss. It seems as though Angela's wildness and her pursuit of war and new beginnings have brought her to hotel rooms and emptiness.

The chorus repeats that Angela's journey has been a long time coming, as she's been running her whole life. Finally, at the end, the singer claims to be lost in Angela and himself, on his knees but feeling as though he belongs and believes. The song ends with the repeated phrase "Home at last," which could be interpreted as finally finding a home in a person or a place, or as a simple declaration of relief at being at home.
