The Mountain Goats Lyrics

Small screen, July evening view
Up and down Grand Avenue
Where the legends get made
Out with the boys' brigade
Part of the motorcade
Flew home from Texas last night
Slept on the flight
Work like a dog all day
Born to chase cars away
Die on the road someday
I try to remember what life was like long ago
But it's gone, you know
Climb the turnbuckle high
Take two falls out of three
Blackout for local TV

Stand in that cold empty hall
Wait for your name to get called
Burn like hillsides on fire
In the squall of the ringside choir
High as a wire
Nearly drive Danny's nose back into his brain
All the cheap seats go insane
Keep my eyes open and try to think straight
No one drives on the 60 this late
Feel like the last person alive
Francisquito to Glenshaw Drive
I try to remember to write in the diary
That my son gave me
Climb the turnbuckle high
Take two falls out of three
Blackout for local TV

I never heard of The Mountain Goats until this album cover caught my eye.  I've been a wrestling fan all my life.  Initially I assumed an indie band making a concept album about prowrestling would be  mocking and ironic, but upon turning the record over and reading the song titles I realized this was the work of a fellow mark. I purchased the album and its quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
This song is especially powerful for me as I too have a job that keeps me overworked and away from home.

We're all overworked and away from home too long, aren't we.

Andrew Paul it’s such a sincere song.

Take a dive 2 of 3 times
Black out to cable tv

Do what you have to to provide for your family but dont forget you have a home to return to. Victory isnt everything.

I keep listening to this album, but I can't help but get caught up on this killer opener. 'I try to remember what life was like long ago. But it's gone, you know?' One of JD's most soulcrushing lines.

Ben Spring "Die on the road someday" is so crushing because, as a wrestling fan, I've seen that happen too much
