Stuck with Me
The Neighbourhood Lyrics

Now I'm feeling guilty for it
Didn't wanna leave
I got caught up in the forest
Hangin' with the trees
Realised I'm less important
Than I thought I'd be
I'm not tellin' you for any certain reason but

Now I'm feelin' guilty for it
I didn't wanna leave, no
I got caught up in the forest
Hangin' with the trees, yeah, yeah
Realized I'm less important (oh, yeah)
Than I thought I'd be, yeah
I'm not tellin' you for any certain reasons but
I just want your empathy

Our lives keep on gettin' shorter
Losin' opportunity
There might be some other ways of looking at it but
That's just what I see
I been gettin' over myself
Thinkin' about what you need
Then I realised that neither of us matter
What's reality, yeah?

You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with you

(You)
Couldn't be more different than me
So each time we agree
I feel fulfilled
You always end up stickin' to me
Somehow, somehow

You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me

Is it just me that thinks that this is a record that Jesse wrote about his relationship with The Neighbourhood?

As we know, most of their songs are penned based upon Jesse’s feelings and life, being the frontman.

I remember a while ago he posted an image on Twitter of his Notebook on his phone, one looked like a note he’d written to one of the other band members after a disagreement, something about how The Neighbourhood wouldn’t be the same without them and they should “stick” together.

Let’s dissect it:

“Now I’m feeling guilty for it, I didn’t want to leave” - Did they get into a disagreement, and Jesse said he wanted to leave the band? Does Jesse feel bad now about saying those things?

“I got caught up in the forest, hanging with the trees” - As most will know, Jesse likes to smoke a lot of marijuana (often referred to as trees). Is this Jesse saying he lost his way smoking too much? Or is he referring to the palm trees in L.A.? Did he get too indulged in trying to live the celebrity high life?

“Realised I’m less important than I thought I’d be” - Jesse always said he expected himself, and The Neighbourhood to be extremely famous. However, Jesse/The Neighbourhood only have a relatively small (in the grand scheme of fame) dedicated following of fans and haven’t done anything that gained widespread attention after Sweater Weather, did he expect more than that? Is he accepting that they haven’t done as well as they originally thought they would?

“I’m not telling you for any certain reasons but I just want your empathy” - Who’s empathy? Ours? His band mates?

“Our lives keep on getting shorter, losing opportunity” - They’re getting older. Jesse is getting older. The more time passes, the less opportunities they have (to gain popularity, critic recognition?) especially since the bands decline in ‘fame’.

“There might be some other ways of looking at it but that’s just what I see” - They still get to release music, even if still only to the reception and appreciation of their dedicated small following. Maybe that’s not good enough though? They wanted a large amount of fame, and now they can only focus on how they haven’t reached it, after being so confident in doing so.

“I’ve been getting over myself, thinking about what you need” - Jesse seems very confident in himself. If you tell someone to “get over yourself”— this usually means stop [arrogantly] loving yourself so much. Rightly so, Jesse has been focused on and loving his solo work— is he now trying to put that to aside and put more energy into what The Neighbourhood needs?

“Then I realised that neither of us matter, what’s reality?” - Is Jesse referring to both him as a solo artist and The Neighbourhood? Maybe he think that really, neither him alone or them as a band, are really all that important at all.

Chorus
“You are stuck with me,
So I’ll guess I’ll be sticking with,
You are stuck with me,
So I’ll guess I’ll be sticking with you” -
The Neighbourhood wouldn’t go on without Jesse as the frontman. They’re stuck with him, even if they don’t always agree with him. Jesse knows this, he knows that if he leaves he’ll be ruining it for everyone, and also knows that he needs the rest of the band too.

“You couldn’t be more different than me, so each time we agree I feel fulfilled” - Is Jesse referring to the fact that The Neighbourhood is completely different to his own solo musical style, and musical incline? Jesse’s solo work is very different to The Neighbourhood’s and he’s also stated that he never really liked rock, and alternative music as opposed to R&B, rap, hip-hop.
Maybe he feels very happy (fulfilled) when he finds common ground with the band, as they are so opposite.

“You always end up sticking to me, somehow” - He doesn’t know how, but The Neighbourhood always remains a part of him. He has strayed away from The Neighbourhood to focus on his own work, but regardless he always finds himself back with the band.

I could be wrong, this is just how I have perceived it. Also this is the bands first single cover that features themselves on it (Lurk doesn’t count!). It might be just coincidental positing of Jesse being the close up subject as the frontman, and the rest of the band members are faded out in the back— but I kinda think it might also point towards the theme of the song about Jesse and his relationship with the band, and the band with him.

Now I'm feeling guilty for it
Didn't wanna leave
I got caught up in the forest
Hangin' with the trees
Realised I'm less important
Than I thought I'd be
I'm not tellin' you for any certain reason but

Now I'm feelin' guilty for it
I didn't wanna leave, no
I got caught up in the forest
Hangin' with the trees, yeah, yeah
Realised I'm less important, oh, yeah
Than I thought I'd be, yeah

I'm not tellin' you for any certain reasons but
I just want your empathy

All lines keep on gettin' shorter
Losin' opportunity
There might be some other ways of looking at it but
That's just what I see
I been gettin' over myself
Thinkin' about what you need
Then I realised that neither of us matter
What's reality, yeah?

You are stuck with me
So I'll guess I'll be sticking with
You are stuck with me
So I'll guess I'll be sticking with you

You couldn't be more different than me
So each time we agree
I feel fulfilled
You always end up stickin' to me

You are stuck with me
