The Shape Of Things To Come
The OK Social Club Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
while all the folk that go to work for a living,
are going to work but don't want to be there,
what's the point,
the point's that we take all this for granted,
we should count our blessings,
but they don't think that way,
when you're caught up in the moment.
What did I do last night,
how did we end up here,
where did everybody go,
we're wasting away,
and we'll never get it back.
Something tells me this is the shape of things to come,
I can't see it changing,
any time now we're going to burn out,
but that's not going to slow us down,
we're just getting started,
oh there'll be consequences,
but you'll never see it that way,
when you're caught up in the moment.
What did I do last night,
how did we end up here,
where did everybody go,
we're wasting away,
and we'll never get it back.
They want to see us fail
they love it when we go a little too far off the rails.
They want to see us fail
they love it when we go a little too far off the rails
They want to see us fail
they love it when we go a little too far off the rails
The OK Social Club's song "The Shape Of Things To Come" speaks to the generation of people who have become disillusioned by the idea of working a 9-to-5 job, wanting more in life and struggling to find meaning in the mundanity of everyday life. The song paints a picture of a group of people who are out drinking and having a good time while others are commuting to work, wishing they could be anywhere else. The lyrics highlight the idea that we often take our lives for granted and overlook the blessings we have. The singer laments that they are wasting their life away and won't be able to get it back.
The song's title suggests that this is the shape of things to come, meaning that this is the trajectory our lives are going to take. The singer describes their desire to keep going and live life to the fullest even though they know that their actions have consequences. Despite this knowledge, they continue, confident that they are just getting started.
The song also touches on the idea that people in the world often want to see others fail, reminding us that we live in a competitive society. The lyrics suggest that there is a sense of satisfaction felt by those who relish in others' failures. The song is both reflective and cautionary, warning the listeners of what lies ahead.
