The band was formed in 1989 at Winstanley College, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, by vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. Simon Tong later became a member. The band originally split in 1995, but reunited in 1996 to great commercial success. They split once more in April 1999. The band reunited once more in June of 2007, but this reunion was short lived, despite the release of the album Forth in 2008, and the band split again in August 2009.
Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to space rock and shoegazer music, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and two acclaimed records. They also endured name and lineup changes, breakups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was Urban Hymns and its single Bitter Sweet Symphony, which became a massive worldwide hit.
Soon after this commercial peak, the band quit amid creative struggles within, and Ashcroft went onto a successful solo career. Tong briefly joined Blur as a replacement for Graham Coxon. It is rumored that Simon Jones did a studio album with Ari Pap of the Floor Monks called 'Aint Nothing To It' and was never released because they both had bigger projects going on at the time. Close family and friends assure us its a fabulous indie/rock/alternate album and they really wish it would have been released.
The Verve were chosen to close the 2008 Glastonbury festival which they did with a set based on the classic 1997 album 'Urban Hymns'.

The Verve Lyrics
Get back, get back again and again
I've been here since I can remember when
My life is a boat, being blown by you
With nothing ahead, just the deepest blue
To me you're like a setting sun
You rise then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You rise then you're gone
Come back, come back again and again
I've been here since I can remember when
Your world just spins whilst mine stands still
Nothing's changed in your gravity grave
To me you're like a setting sun
You rise then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You shine then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You shine then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You shine then you're gone
But I want your life
So bright it burns my eyes
Sounds like the perfect way
To end my life
To me you're like a setting sun
To me you're like a setting sun

Gravity Grave - lyrics
Get back, get back again and again
I've been here since I can remember when
My life is a boat, being blown by you
With nothing ahead, just the deepest blue
To me you're like a setting sun
You rise then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You rise then you're gone
Come back, come back again and again,
I've been here since I can remember when
The world just spins whilst mine stands still
Nothing's changed in your gravity grave
To me you're like a setting sun
You rise then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You shine then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You shine then you're gone
To me you're like a setting sun
You shine then you're gone
But I want your light
So bright it burns my eyes
Sounds like a perfect way
To end my life
To me you're like a setting sun
To me you're like a setting sun

I've got to say, as far as the Video/Song content goes , this one that I only discovered just recently aces even the endlessly rewatchable 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' of International Hall of Fame - er - fame :/
Of course, Ashcroft was born to be On Camera/become a Natural Star due to all sorts of Morrison/Jagger Channeling Facets of Born Charisma and innate drive, etc -
But it is nice to see the other band members being given more than just walk-on parts in the early videos, and the camera quietly also loves the proportionately quiet (in proportion to The Ashcroft, that is) muso-genius slide guitarist of-the-unfeigned-sensitive-expression Nick McCabe as well -
Brilliant as the Ashcroft/Strange Beautiful Girl spontaneous snogging in the Cafe scene is, it would amount to far less without the inserted shots of McCabe looking at that absolutely tempting plate of Full English Breakfast wonderfulness with all the empty indifference Mr. Ashcroft displayed towards all members of the general public whilst striding down a Hoxton Pavement a couple of albums down the line -
(Aside from all that, there is a mystery and quality about this very first 'Storm in Heaven' era of The Verve that makes it absolutely clear why John Leckie - who worked with them all from the Beatles to Syd Barrett (or vice versa) declared the The Verve were "one of the only bands that I’ve ever begged to work with... I just couldn’t believe what I was witnessing."[Oh, and let us not overlook the little detail of the guy by the road playing the mouth-harp against the bleak industrial background for just a few seconds - really good Pop Videos that last approx. 4 minutes save us a lot of time from reading Beat-era 'Road' novels, or watching full length and rather dull 'Two Lane Blacktop' style movies and etc

@Harrambou
i agree with you
according to my musical app my notations are :
urban hymns : 25
northern soul : 21
storm in heaven : 15
b sides & outtakes : 15
forth : 14
but if i class by years, i have to add the EPs, b sides, ... and i have to recognize that i prefer the early Verve (1992, 1993)

early verve were probably the greatest band on the planet at one stage.
Martin Quarton
Most definitely. I still think their first album is the best.

There was a live session on Radio 1 years ago, maybe on John Peel, and they were astounding. When the original line up broke up the magic disappeared.

@Misael Sanchez Nah it's more space rock than shoegaze. Although they're very similar obviously.
