Monk Alone: The Complete Columbia Solo Studio Recordings of Thelonious Monk- 1962-1968
As any Monk aficionado knows, his solo piano performances were wonderful, idiosyncratic, living works of art that often wound up in completely different territory from where they began. Sometimes the results would be a little shakey; often they would be inspiring. Regardless, these solo performances were adventures, and that quality makes the double disc Monk Alone: The Complete Columbia Solo Studio Recordings, 1962-1968 irresistable. Sometimes the results would be a little shakey; often they would be inspiring. Regardless, these solo performances were adventures, and that quality makes the double disc Monk Alone: The Complete Columbia Solo Studio Recordings, 1962-1968 irresistable. Much of this music was released on such Columbia albums as Monk's Dream and Underground over the course of the '60s, but this is the first time all the material has been collected in one place and the results are frequently stunning. The first disc, plus the first two tracks on disc two, contain the master takes. The second disc is largely comprised of alternate takes -- four have been released, the remaining 14 make their debut here. That's nearly a full album of "new" material and almost all of it is as compelling as the master takes. Certainly, the collection is designed for Monk completists, but even casual fans will find something to marvel at here.

Body And Soul
Thelonious Monk Lyrics
My heart is sad and lonely
For you I sigh, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul
I spend my days in longing
And wondering why it's me you're wronging
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul
I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you'd turn away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I could have just one more chance to prove, dear
My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul
My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for the very taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul

Since 1982, I have been an over-the-top, deeply committed disciple of Thelonious' gifts to the world's ears. I have traveled extensively for most of my 50+years on earth, and there is no single musician/composer/visionary that has touched my inner core more than Thelonious. Of all of the masterpieces I've memorized from him, this single recording is my all time favorite. I love this iconic tune, the stature that is has in the music world and the way that Thelonious brings it to us. Thank you, Thelonious Sphere Monk...especially for the chord at 3:33...it tells us everything we need to know about how deep you can go. VP

0:14 how modern that chord/voicing sounds, he's already pre-visioning the future of r&b, soul and so on in '63. same for 3:33

Este tema es tan sorprendente que se adecúa a cualquier momento y en manos de Thelonious es infinitamente superior

Monk once said, I can player like them other cats, but they can't play like me. How true.

I don't care what you call it, Monk was avant-garde.

And if someone asks me whats the matter of life, well... In this song you got the body in a hand and the soul on another.

Monk is an epiphany to me. He reminds me that humans in their arrogant striving for perfection are often made to look foolish when God will take what we consider to be below standard or inappropriate and make it work supremely better than what our rules dictated. That's Monk.
