The series, produced by Steven Churchill of Odyssey Productions (originally Odyssey Visual Design) & Miramar Productions, began in 1990. The typical entry in the Mind's Eye series is a short film, usually 50 to 60 minutes long, of a series of music video-like sequences showcasing computer animation. The cutting-edge computer animations were generally not produced specifically for the Mind's Eye series but rather were work originally created for other purposes, including demo reels, commercials, music videos, and feature films. These sequences were assembled into a narrative through creative editing. To help unify the ground-breaking visuals, each film had an original electronic music soundtrack.
The electronic score to The Gate to the Mind's Eye (1994) is by Thomas Dolby. His inventive score ranges from moody instrumentals to dance to jazz. Continuing the trend started in Jan Hammer's score for the previous Mind's Eye film, Beyond the Mind's Eye (1992), five of the nine tracks include vocals:1. "Armageddon" includes a poem in medieval Latin (written by Prof. Martin Robertson).2. "Planet Of Lost Souls" 3. "Big Bang Backwards"4. "N.E.O. (Near-Earth Object) an astronomy-themed song with vocals by scientist and singer Dr. Fiorella Torenzi.5. "The Ascent Of Man," Parts I-VI6. "Valley Of The Mind's Eye," a song about the progress of human technology which includes a brief quotation from a love poem in French.7. "Nuvogue," the first jazz track in the Mind's Eye series8. "Quantum Mechanic," with vocals by Dr. Terenzi9. "Moonbase" includes a sample from a Navajo chant ("Shoe Game Songs," from the New World Records album Navajo Songs from Canyon de Chelly).
