Singapore
Tom Waits Lyrics

We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

We sail tonight for Singapore
Don't fall asleep while you're ashore
Cross your heart and hope to die
When you hear the children cry
Let marrow bone and cleaver choose
While making feet for children's shoes
Through the alley, back from hell
When you hear that steeple bell
You must say goodbye to me

Wipe him down with gasoline
Till his arms are hard and mean
From now on boys this iron boat's your home
So heave away, boys

We sail tonight for Singapore
Take your blankets from the floor
Wash your mouth out by the door
The whole town's made of iron ore
Every witness turns to steam
They all become Italian dreams
Fill your pockets up with earth
Get yourself a dollar's worth
Away boys, away boys, heave away

The captain is a one-armed dwarf
He's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king
So take this ring

We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
Took off to the land of nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I drank along a colored wind
I dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

Manic sea shanty meets muppets!

Miss Piggy hit a bar in the City of the Lion...
where a Mickey Finn made her feistier than ever -
as Kermit fell drooling, the Divine Miss P
made tawny moors quail,
Portuguese man o' wars sail...
confirmed "I like this Waits, 'n'
any time he likes he can rattle MY gates"
Oink!

I was a sailor in the Navy stationed on a ship in Japan when a shipmate of mine let me borrow this album. This song really pulled me in and made me a fan of him. Ironic or not, it wasn't because this song was about sailing, it was because this song was so ridiculous. I loved how it toyed with so many contrasting notes, that it sounded like drunkenness and danger.

This was the most useful episode of Sesame Street ever - thank you Cookie Monster for giving this young man the perfect advice to succeed as a cabin boy in the merchant navy.

Weak joke. Do you care to try again?

NOTHING else was written, sung, played or produced like this album in 1985. NOTHING!
While everyone else was heaping shiny DX7 bell sounds on everything, Waits was thrashing seven shades of shit out of anything that made a noise (including his own voice, of course). A timeless album.

Rumpelstiltskin's Stinking Fangs

This is the album I usually introduce people to Waits with. It's amazingly unique and raw but probably his most accessible album. Bone machine, real gone, swordfish trombones, and blood money are my favorites. But the man tends to wite pure gold with wildy inconsistent consistency, most of his albums stand alone. They are all amazing. Don't much care for his early accounting crooning, im glad his wife introduced him to captain beefheart. Beefhearts influence is massive, if you don't know about the Magic Band, Che k out the albums "safe as Milk", and Trout Face Mask. Then tell me tom pulled it all out of thin air haha. I love music so much. Lately I've been listening to and writing the craziest shit I can find. Mostly black metal, grindcore, and an AMAZING Japanese tsunami of raw madness , G.I.S.M. ,(guerrilla, incendiary sabotage, mutineer) .. the albums Detestation, and Sonicrime Therapy are so unique and raw it's probably my favorite band right now. But I'm going through hard times and the music I choose to listen to and the music I choose to write reflects that. Anyway. Fantastic song. I've loved Tom waits since my dear old friend used to have it playing in the background of her house and I couldn't help starting to growl along with him. I was digging lightning Hopkins, howlin wolf, captain beefheart, and a lot of crust punk at the time. I fell on love with that girl, and waits too, in that house.

Everyone should own this album , one of the best American recordings in American history. Not a exaggeration.
