The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Such Great Heights
The Postal Service Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images
And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate
That God Himself did make
Us into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay
And true it may seem like a stretch
But it's thoughts like this that catch
My troubled head when you're away
And when I am missing you to death
And when you are out there on the road
For several weeks of shows
And when you scan the radio
I hope this song will guide you home
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay
I tried my best to leave
This all on your machine
But the persistent beat
It sounded thin upon the sending
And that frankly will not fly
You'll hear the shrillest highs
And lowest lows with the windows down
And this is guiding you home
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay
(They will see us waving from such great heights)
(Come down now)
They will see us waving from such great heights
(Come down now)
The lyrics to The Postal Service's song Such Great Heights are about the idea of two people being made for each other, as if they were created from the same mold. The first verse talks about the perfect alignment of the freckles in their eyes when they kiss, which seems to be a sign that they were meant to be together. The second verse expresses the feeling of missing someone so much that even the smallest connection or thought of them can bring some comfort. The line "I hope this song will guide you home" shows the power of music to bring people closer together and provide a sense of belonging.
The chorus "They will see us waving from such great heights, come down now, they'll say, but everything looks perfect from far away, come down now, but we'll stay" seems to suggest that others may not understand the depth of their relationship or the way they feel about each other, but they will continue to hold on because everything seems perfect when they are together.
The lyrics of this song are incredibly poetic but can be interpreted in different ways. Some people might identify themselves with the feeling of missing someone deeply, while others might focus on the idea of being created to be with someone. Nonetheless, the song's overall mood is hopeful and speaks to the resilience of love.

I am thinking it's a sign
I feel like there's a reason that we're together
That the freckles in our eyes
Our unique features and traits are what make us special
Are mirror images
We share a strong connection and are similar in many ways
And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned
Our love is so perfectly matched that even the smallest details line up
And I have to speculate
I can't help but wonder
That God Himself did make
Maybe a higher power played a role in bringing us together
Us into corresponding shapes
Our traits fit together like puzzle pieces
Like puzzle pieces from the clay
We were molded to fit together
And true it may seem like a stretch
I know this might sound far-fetched
But it's thoughts like this that catch
These kinds of ideas can get stuck in my head
My troubled head when you're away
When you're not here, I start to worry
And when I am missing you to death
I miss you so much it hurts
And when you are out there on the road
When you're traveling and far away
For several weeks of shows
Performing for weeks at a time
And when you scan the radio
Looking for something to listen to
I hope this song will guide you home
I hope this song will bring you back to me
They will see us waving from such great heights
We'll stand out and be noticed by everyone
Come down now, they'll say
They'll think we're too high up and need to come back to reality
But everything looks perfect from far away
Things can look better from a distance
Come down now but we'll stay
We'll still be here, even if we seem far away
I tried my best to leave
I attempted to convey my feelings
This all on your machine
Through a recording or message
But the persistent beat
The underlying feeling is too strong
It sounded thin upon the sending
The message lost some of its impact through technology
And that frankly will not fly
That won't be enough
You'll hear the shrillest highs
This song captures the extreme emotions we feel
And lowest lows with the windows down
We share all of our highs and lows
And this is guiding you home
This song will bring you back to me
