The band was originally formed on September 27, 2016, and announced it the next day via their YouTube account. Since then, the band has released three EPs and two albums.
On October 7, 2016, the group released their debut single "Taking You", a track from their debut EP, Only the Beginning, which was released on November 25 of the same year. Their second EP, Something Different, was released on April 21, 2017. Its title track was released as the lead single the same day. They released their third EP, Why Don't We Just, on June 2, 2017.
They released their debut album 8 Letters on August 31, 2018. It debuted and peaked at number 9 on the Billboard 200.
In 2021, they released singles Love Back and Mistletoe. They also released their sophomore album, The Good Times and The Bad Ones, along with the singles Fallin' (Adrenaline), Slow Down, and Lotus Inn. The album debuted and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200.
The band has currently been releasing music they've written themselves, something they have recently committed to doing. They have recently released Let Me Down Easy (Lie), Just Friends, and How Do You Love Somebody. In January 2022, they released Don't Wake Me Up, a collaboration with Jonas Blue.
They had originally planned to go on tour in the United States, The Good Times Only Tour, in 2022 from July 27 to October 1, but because of unforeseen consequences, the band canceled the tour and began an official hiatus.
Don't Change
Why Don't We Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You've been in your mind
We were supposed to be leaving
But you keep overthinking
Everything you try
Try, oh, it's not right
One doubt, then another
Another something to cover
You're in the mirror, but you're not seeing yourself
Just seeing all the ways you could be someone else
I know you feel sometimes like you're not good enough
You're not the only one
All I'm tryna say is don't change
Every part of you is just right, don't change
Not a single curve or one line
So why cover up your flaws
When they make you who you are? (Oh-oh)
All I'm tryna say is don't change (ooh)
Don't change (ooh)
It's hard, it's hard
When you're in the dark
Tryna see things clearly
Yeah, I felt how you're feeling
All of the stress, pressure
All in pursuit of perfection
Wish you knew that imperfections
Make you an exception
You're in the mirror, but you're not seeing yourself (not seeing yourself)
Just seeing all the ways you could be someone else
I know you feel sometimes like you're not good enough (oh)
You're not the only one
All I'm tryna say is don't change
Every part of you is just right, don't change
Not a single curve or one line
So why cover up your flaws
When they make you who you are? (Oh-oh)
All I'm tryna say is don't change (ooh)
Don't change (ooh)
No, no, no
No, not one thing
No, not one thing (not one thing)
Every part about you is as it should be (woah-oh)
No, not one thing
No, not one thing (no, not one thing)
Every part about you is as it should be
Don't change
Every part of you is just right, don't change
Not a single curve or one line
So why cover up your flaws
When they make you who you are? (Oh-oh)
All I'm tryna say is don't change
The lyrics to Why Don't We's "Don't Change" address the feelings of self-doubt and insecurity that many people experience. The singer acknowledges that the person they are addressing has been overthinking and second-guessing themselves all night, and offers reassurance that every part of them is "just right". The lines "Not a single curve or one line / So why cover up your flaws / When they make you who you are?" suggest that the singer believes that the person's perceived imperfections make them unique and worthy of acceptance, and that they should not feel pressure to conform to any ideal of perfection that may exist.
The chorus repeats the phrase "All I'm tryna say is don't change" multiple times, emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance and self-love. The lines "You're in the mirror, but you're not seeing yourself / Just seeing all the ways you could be someone else" speak to a common experience of comparing oneself to others and feeling inadequate as a result. However, the singer sees the beauty and value of the person they are addressing, flaws and all.
Overall, "Don't Change" is a hopeful and uplifting song that encourages listeners to embrace themselves fully, flaws and all. Its message of self-acceptance is particularly relevant in a world that often places unrealistic expectations on people and can lead to feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.
