Sagiv Cohen - musician, performer and producer - was born in 1975 and grow up in Pardes Hana settlement. Sagiv was brought up in a music-oriented Yemeni and religious family. His Yemeni voice developed due to the influence of the synagogue’s style of prayers and psalms and due to his grandfather’s influence on him.
Sagiv’s theatrical experience started in his youth, when he was already considered pleasant-voiced. He started to write his first songs during his teenaged years, whilst teaching himself to play the keyboard and the guitar. Even then, Sagiv started to feel how music penetrates his heart and soul, and slowly becomes an inseparable part of his personality, his world and his dreams.
Sagiv graduated his high school education at a Yeshiva that combined Torah / Gmara studies with profane studies. Simultaneously, Sagiv began performing in pubs, clubs and other different events all around Israel. This lasted a few years, whilst accumulating a vast theatrical experience. During this time, Sagiv continued to write and compose songs, whilst making his living through temporary jobs. Sagiv’s debut single was released to the radio when he was only 18.
After finishing his IDF service, Sagiv became a student at the Rimon School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. This experience exposed him for the first time to the secrets of academic music. Sagiv took part in a variety of ensembles: Gospel, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Afro-Pop and Ofer Portugali’s Jazz Gospel.
During his first year of studies, Sagiv wrote with another friend from school, Eran Yehoshua (currently a member of “Mimika”), an interpretation to Boaz Shar’abi’s song “At Li Lila”. This was a part of a traditional contest that takes place at the school every year. This song was later added to Sagiv’s debut album, “Wait one more minute”.
Sagiv is married and has two children – a boy and a girl.
In 2001, Sagiv’s song, “Umlalala” was chosen to participate at the pre-contest for the Eurovision Song Contest. His first child was born that week.
Sagiv was surprised he was chosen, and due to budget problems, produced, with the help of friends, a performance that was very successful. As a result, his song was played on the radio very often.
Following this, Sagiv participated in the television production “The Next King” and also performed on “The Tavern” and on the radio show - “The Voice of the People”.
In 2003, following many failing attempts with the Israeli music industry, Sagiv decided to record his debut album himself. Therefore, in April 2004, with his friends’ moral and financial support, Sagiv’s debut album - “Wait One More Minute” was released, as a dual production with Ron Tichon.
The album, that includes a variety of musical styles, was positively criticized, presenting Sagiv as an artist, a musician and a performer with an immense vocal ability and a unique personal interpretation.
Following the success of the debut album, Sagiv started a tour around Israel, to include a band of instruments players. During the shows, Sagiv hosted Ofer Portugali’s Jazz Gospel band (of which he was a member), Margalit Tzan’ani, Avner Gadassi, Gavriel Butler-Thuckt) and Ilan Babilon. These concerts brought a vast crowd and caused excitement.
In November 2004, Sagiv took part in a spectacular international concert for the yearly anniversary of the nomination of Pope Yochanan Paulos II. The concert was in Warsaw, Poland, and was broadcasted live to all Christian communities around the world.
In 2005, Sagiv recorded his second album “Come True for Me”. he also acted as the producer and the sound technician. Most recordings took place in his private studio. The album was released at the end of December 2005.
Nowadays, Sagiv has a show tour of his songs in different versions, in addition to writing and producing songs to other performers. Furthermore, Sagiv participates in a theatre play “The Tenth Chamber” and works on a new album which should be release world-wide. This album combines the Yemeni orientation with contemporary pop.
