Ahmed was born on the 5th December 1934 in Sayda, Lebanon to a Syrian father and a Lebanese mother, and was brought up in Damascus. She started to sing when she was six years old, as she was not interested in studying. Her mother was the first to discover her talent; she supported her daughter in learning music and playing oud, which she learnt from the famous composer Mohamed El Naami (whom she eventually married).
She started by singing for friends and neighbours. In 1946 the Lebanese radio company approved Ahmed as a singer. Her success and popularity started in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and then Egypt. In 1957 she settled in Cairo, and started her professional career as a singer. Her love for Egypt led her to spend the rest of her life there, participating in all najor national occasions.
Her repertoire included lyrical, romantic, national, and religious songs. Her songs were composed by such famous composers as Riyad El Sonbaty, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Kamal El Tawyl, Mohamed El Mogey, Mohamed Sultn, Helmi Bakr, and Mohamed El Sherif. She also turned to acing, appearing in several films and one stage play, though her acting career was cut short when she developed cancer, from which she died on the 21st September 1983 in Cairo.
