His career started in 1985 with working together with Yousuke Yamashita and in Tsuneo Imahori's band "Tipographica".
In 1992 he founded the J-pop band "Spank Happy".
In 1999 he was a co founder of "Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden" (DCPRG), a jazz band with Techno and House influences. In 2004 his solo album "Dégustation à Jazz" has been released.
He also worked together with many Japanese bands and musicians like the bands "Ruins" or "Ground Zero", female singer "UA", the project "Art Bears Revisited" as well as with jazz musicians Hiroshi Minami, Otomo Yoshihide and his New Jazz Quintet or Tokyo Zawinul Bach (東京ザヴィヌルバッハ)
Besides his musical activities, he released books and essays and is teacher on several Japanese universities, such as University of Tokyo (2004-2005) or University Keiou in 2008.
His musical style can be described as avantgarde, post modern Jazz with electronica. On some of his works he can also be heard as a singer.
He was a founder/bandleader of jazz-funk big band, Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden. Now he plays in his own "Naruyoshi Kikuchi Dub Sextet." In 2012 he did the OST for the very successful and well known anime "Lupin III: A woman called Fujiko Mine".
His older brother is Hideyuki Kikuchi, a novel author.
