Formed in 2005, their sound is a melancholic wall of noise and repetition. They have been compared to artists as varied as Sigur Rós, Depeche Mode and Sonic Youth, and have been championed by the likes of Artrocker and Nightshift magazines. Fashion website Supersweet nominated 1877 the 2nd best band to watch out for in 2010 and their previous single ‘I am an Antagonist’ was played on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6music radio show. They released their last single ‘Videophobia’, an 8-minute sonic epic inspired by VHS and krautrock, in 2012 on a limited edition vintage audio cassette.
1877 returned in 2014 with a 4-track EP ‘There is a Policeman Inside All Of Our Heads, He Must Be Destroyed’ released through Oxfordshire label ‘Fastest Dog’. Four tracks of atmosphere and repetition, from the band’s dark electronic take on Bruce Springsteen’s ‘State Trooper’, to the brooding ‘And Now, We Rest’ and dream-like finale of ‘Innovations’. Opening track and live favourite ‘We Are Sinister’ was recently added to the BBC 6 Music Playlist and the group were once again broadcast by Steve Lamacq’s on his ‘6 Music Recommends’ show.
1877 released track 'The Way Back' in 2015, before taking a well deserved break. The band will return in 2018.
