2) In July of 1665 the pest reached the City of London. The vast majority of the wealthier dwellers fled from the plague. Only a small number of clerics, doctors and apothecaries decided to stay. Several sanitary measures were ordered. The municipalities put pest physicians into service and funerals were organized in detail. The inhabitants were urged to light fire by day and night precisely because it was thought to clean up the air.
In the capital the death toll from the plague passed the number of 70.000. The Great Fire of London which took place from the 2nd to the 5th of September 1666 nearly destroyed a third of the overpopulated residential and commercial districts of the city. This event stalled the devastation of the plague as all of the contaminated rats and fleas burnt in the flames.
The fire itself consumed 400 streets, 13.200 houses and 87 parish churches thereunder the old Saint Paul's Cathedral, Newgate City Prison, the Royal Exchange, the Custom House, 3 of the 4 city gates, the german Stalhof and Christ's Hospital where during the plague 32 orphans died under medically unexplainable circumstances. The only remaining document of this "incident" was the medical file of Matthew Grindhausen.
Matthew Grindhausen was born in 1657 in Clerkenwell's dictrict. At the age of 8 he lost both of his parents and his 4 siblings to the plague. Thereupon pest physician Nicholas Aldermary took the orphaned kid to Christ's Hospital where he died of an unspecified case of illness a year later. During his stay at the infirmary Matthew developed, apparently amplified by the isolation, a growing dread of people. Furthermore he oftentimes confessed the desire to amputate his limbs. He repeatedly tried to cut off his arms. Later on he even tried to bite them off as he was convinced that his arms cause harm. Reproachful he held himself responsible for the death of his family. His arms were the tools of the devil.
Today there are 7 children throughout the world in treatment where experts believe on the basis of the described symptoms in Matthew Grindhausen's medical file that it concerns the same disease: the Grindhausen Syndrome!
THE DISEASE
Grindhausen Syndrome or Diabolus-Apotemnophilia (from Greek ap?t?µ?e?? "to cut off", and f???a "love of") is the overwhelming desire to amputate one or more healthy limbs or other parts of the body. Sometimes its sufferers take it upon themselves to amputate their own limbs. Although it most commonly refers to people who wish to amputate limbs, the term Grindhausen also applies to those who wish to alter their bodily integrity in general.
