Year of the Cat
Al Stewart Lyrics

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat

While she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat

Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the newborn day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat

Year of the cat

@Brett DeLong ...& the country that's being so very lyrically described, is absolutely & obviously Morocco!
'Visted twice during the winters of '70 & '76-77 for about a month each time.
'Owned a '62 ..."red & white VW microbus with 25 windows & a sun roof" ...the first time. I.e. a Samba model!!
'Rented a '75 Renault Four, five door station wagon at the Casablanca airpory for the second trip. 'Carried auto plug-in & play portable Hitachi cassette decks both times. On the second trip we played the YOTC album almost to death, especially the title song! (I had just seen Al & band in concert at Vancouver's QE II Theatre weeks before departing.)
'Never found that beautiful but elusive woman "... coming out of the sun in a silk dress running; like a watercolour in the rain..." 'However my platonic travelling partner Shelley H. was (& still is) really hot (especially in her white macrama tiny string bikini, which she wore on secluded beaches!!
You rock Shell! 👙 🍁 👙
Other lines are obviously about the streets & warrens of the souks, the medinas & of the casbahs of the old city quarters; & of the desert caravans & coastal route fortresses!
We dropped the car in Marrakech so that we could ride the famous Marrakech Express train back to Casablanca to pick up our Royal Air Maroc flight to Las Palmas de Grande Cannaria
We also visited Los Rodeos Airport on Tenerife Island in the Canaries, where less than two months later, 583 souls died on the runway in the most tragic accident in civil aviation history! I.e. double KLM & Pan Am 747 ground (severe runway incursion) crash.

'Oh...the hunanity!

I dislike this song for only one reason --- it ends. What a masterpiece.

I heard this song in 1986 just after my pregnancy was confirmed. I was 21 and the father had made it clear he wasn't interested.. still isn't. I'm so glad I kept my beautiful son.

@Julian Frederick ..I understand your sentiment but there are so many reasons a woman makes a decision to terminate or give it away.. I imagine it's very difficult to choose either of the three options ..please don't think women are responsible for the "world burning down" ..they had plenty of help from men.. I mean.. they didn't make the babies by themselves

God bless - you knew deep down motherhood is the greatest blessing!
