Alfonso X was a medieval King of Castille (Present day Spain) who is best know for his intellectual aquirements. He wrote many books on subjects such as law, astrology and lapidary. Don Alfonso was called "El Sabio" that is the wise. He devoted much efort to music and brought jewish and moorish musicians to play at his court from their kingdoms in the South. During his reign and most likely under his supervision the Cantigas de Santa Maria were compiled. Theses are traditional profane pieces of music relating the miracles of the Virgin Mary and intended to be sung by pilgrimgs as they progressed slowly on their way to places such as Santiago de Compostela.
