Chris - I play Irish fiddle (20 yrs now), as well as Norwegian, and I can tell you, for certain... Irish music is a much more widespread tradition than Norwegian music, internationally! So, that means that we have new tunes being composed, recorded & ultimately learned all the time.. I suppose I hear what you're saying. I can see Irish music losing that steam it had picked up in the 70s, 80s, 90s. Unless you're deep into it, new sounds and tunes may slip by. Once you've done this long enough, I could sit down & compose a whole album anytime! If I wanted to, and only if I notated it by hand. Or else I'd forget, and the tunes all get lost in the "void"...I guess. Lol anyway, Norwegian music is just such a smaller scene, that it clearly shows when people are exemplary.. players like Annbjørg really do create MAGIC with their compositions. Traditional or not, it is refreshing you are 100% right. I mean this album is getting up there in age now, and yet it's still ahead of its time today. "Fønix" is the greatest ever 7/8 tune. Could be Scandinavian, or is it Balkan? Or Spanish? The whole Prisme album is fantastic, but the only "trad" tune I'm aware of is "Vilvinteren" aka the Wild Winter. Annbjørg is very respectful in honoring centuries old styles and traditions, while still being unique, worldly and modern about it. What the hell did I just talk about here. Hahaha!
