1) Barbarella: Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll!
Barbarella is a rock band from Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The band formed in 2005 and presented its debut album, ‘Neon City’, in 2008. Dutch website 3voor12 calls the album ‘tight as a ruler and greasy as mud’, Dutch Music magazine LiveXS: ‘What a trip, people! Go and see!’ The CD, with artwork by artist Adriano De Vincentiis, can be downloaded at Mininova.org, lastfm and Barbarella.bandcamp.com. From september untill november 2009 Barbarella joins the Popronde 2009.
Influences
Bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep had a great influence, but even though the connection with the good old 60’s and 70’s hard rock is evident, there’s more! Life didn’t stop in 1976 you know! There was punk, grunge and most of all: stoner. Mix all this together and you’ll know what Barbarella is all about: tight rhythm, heavy bass and strong riffs. True modern times Rock ‘n’ Roll.
History
In 2005 Peter Onstein (drums), Joost Reijnders (bass guitar) and Remco Verweij (guitar) teamed up. They started out playing some tunes Remco was eager to experiment with. Soon they were ready to complement their team with a singer and after a short search they found Jody Peters, who also plays a mean guitar.
Unfortunately, in December 2008 Remco decides to quit the band. But by doing that, he paved the way for Jaap Lagerweij (The Mellotones). Jaap joins Barbarella February 2009.
Cool!
Barbarella gained quite a following and got some great reviews while touring the clubs in Holland. They recorded some songs in 2006, which were put on their myspace. But it wasn’t until October 2008 that they released their debut album ‘Neon City’. Starting in February 2009, ‘Neon City’ can be downloaded for free! Among others from lastfm.com, torrentsite Mininova.org and Barbarella.bandcamp.com.
By March 2009 3FM (Dutch national radio) dj Eric Corton plays ‘Neon City’ on his show. Other reviews are also very enthousiastic: ‘tight as a ruler and greasy as mud’ (website 3voor12) and ‘Cool!’ (Radio Mortale). Dutch music magazine ‘Fret’ chooses ‘Neon City’ to feature as ‘Demo of the month’. In fall 2009 the band joins the Popronde.
Barbarella announced that they will record new songs during fall 2009. The album is scheduled to be released spring 2010.
Barbarella is:

2) Barbarella was an all-female dance/pop trio from the Netherlands, who released two albums in their short-lived career during 1989-1991 - Sucker For Your Love, and Don't Stop The Dance.
They first came to prominence performing in the Dutch TV show, The Pin Up Club, around 1988/1989, eventually recording and releasing what was to become its theme song, "We Cheer You Up (Join The Pin Up Club)". The song, a happy uptempo pop song in the Euro disco vein of that time, quickly hit the Top 10 in their native the Netherlands and gathered some momentum and interest around the European Continent.
A quickly compiled debut album consisting a few original tracks, covers and remixes (the title track "Sucker For Your Love" that is cover version of Toto Coelo's song "Dracula's Tango", and also including a version of "Summer in the City") followed around late 1989/early 1990, and yielded further singles in "(Like A) Fata Morgana" and the title track "Sucker For Your Love". However, apart from becoming minor hits in Holland and Finland (where their debut album went Gold too), they weren't an international breakthrough.
A year later at the time of their second album Don't Stop The Dance, the line up had changed slightly one member having left and now being replaced by a new one. However, while rave and r'n'b were all the rage across the European charts, Barbarella had done nothing to update their simple, melodic 80s flavoured Euro disco, and despite the brilliantly catchy title track lead single, the project flopped badly and was soon abandoned, the girls going their separate ways.
