Masterpiece, Big Thief's debut album, is filled with characters and visceral narratives, songs that pivot in the space of a few words. Adrianne's voice and guitar playing speak of rich emotional territory with grace and insight. In her words, the record tracks "the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they're grounded in simple things."

Big Thief Lyrics
Oh the last time I saw Paul
I was horrible and almost let him in
But I stopped and caught the wall
And my mouth got dry so all I did was take him for a spin
Yeah, we hopped inside my car
And I drove in circles 'round the freight train yard
And he turned the headlights off
Then he pulled the bottle out
And then he showed me what is love
I'll be your morning bright goodnight shadow machine
I'll be your record player, baby, if you know what I mean
I'll be your real tough cookie with the whiskey breath
I'll be a killer and a thriller and the cause of our death
In the blossom of the months
I was sure that I'd get driven off with thought
So I swallowed all of it
As I realized there was no one who could kiss away my shit
I'll be your morning bright goodnight shadow machine
I'll be your record player, baby, if you know what I mean
I'll be your real tough cookie with the whiskey breath
I'll be a killer and a thriller and the cause of our death
Oh Paul, I know you said that you'd take me any way I came or went
But I'll push you from my brain
See, you're gentle, baby
I couldn't stay, I'd only bring you pain
I was your starry-eyed lover and the one that you saw
I was your hurricane rider and the woman you'd call
We were just two moonshiners on the cusp of a breath
And I've been burning for you baby since the minute I left

I've came back here to express about this song/Headcanon
TW: abuse
In my perspective, Paul is the abuser, the singer is the victim
In the first verse, Paul knocks the victim's door, the victim doesn't want to open it but they have to
When they say "And he shows me what is love" is when Paul, the abuser, abuses the victim, showing them what's "love"
In the chorus, Paul is telling the victim how he's amazing and how he's important and telling he loves the victim, but like a maniac/he's obsessed with them
"The cause of our death" Paul knows that what he's doing is illegal/wrong, he knows he will lose control, he knows he can kill the victim anytime
Then, at the end, the victim starts to blame themself because they're controlled abd manipulated by Paul
"As I realize no one would kiss my shit", nobody will help me, because Paul is right, I'm the wrong here
"But I push you from my bed, see you're gentle baby, I could only give you pain" again, the victim blames themself thinking they're the wrong one, that Paul knows what he's doing
At the end/last verse, "I was your [...]" the victim and Paul argue, they can't stand living with eachother, they hate themselves, they are done
This song really represents me and comforts me, it's something I can relate for, I'm the victim
If you're dealing with Paul, end with him, be the last verse, you don't deserve him
sup I am gabs
I think everyone has different views on describing this song
My thoughts
Paul left her after making her fall in love with him but she don't want to forget him and did many things for him. Paul also want to be with her but due to some problems he is not
So she died after getting news she died Paul also died
They are now in heaven 🤔
Hope my Paul is good now
I don't care if my Paul die
So pathetic 😌

I’ve been a barista for 7 years and regularly play Big Thief at work. I can’t tell you how many people have come up to me in absolute wonder asking me what this is so they can find it again.
