in der Nähe von Köln geboren, studierte an der Hochschule für Musik in Detmold bei Frau Prof. Renate Kretschmar-Fischer und schloss das Studium 1990 mit dem Konzertexamen ab. Als Stipendiatin des DAAD war sie 1988-89 Studentin des Royal College of Music in London bei Peter Wallfish.
Meisterkurse von Hans Leygraf, Halina Czerny-Stefanska, Gerhard Oppitz und Bruno Leonardo Gelber gaben ihr weitere künstlerische Impulse.
Als Gewinnerin des Chopinwettbewerbes in Köln und Darmstadt, des Joy-Scott-Preises des Royal College of Music und des GEDOK-Preises und ausgezeichnet beim Internationalen Klavierwettbewerb Maria Canals in Barcelona und beim Deutschen Musikwettbewerb, 1991 aufgenommen in die "Bundesauswahl Konzerte Junger Künstler" des Deutschen Musikrates, begann sie ihre Konzerterfahrungen.
Sie konzertierte mit Orchestern wie Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, Berliner Symphoniker, Deutsche Kammerakademie, Herforder Symphoniker, Israel Sinfonietta, Orchester der Beethovenhalle Bonn, Philharmonia Hungarica, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Halle, Rheinisches Kammerorchester, Staatl.Symphonieorchester Eisenach, Staatliches Sinfonieorchester Greiz und anderen.
Auf Einladungen verschiedener Festivals wirkte sie als Solistin beim Rheinischen Musikfest, dem Internationalen Musikfestival Dinu Lipatti, Sinaia (Rumänien), Kunstfest Weimar, Internationalen Beethovenfest Bonn, Chopin-Festival Marianske Lazne, Marienbad (Tschechoslowakei), Festival de l'Eté, Mosan (Belgien), Klaviersommer im Kammermusiksaal des Beethovenhauses Bonn, Festival de
Flandre (Belgien), beim Rheingau-Musikfestival und dem Internationalen Chamber Music Festival "La Musica" in Florida mit.
Studioproduktionen, Konzertmitschnitte und ihr Künstlerporträt wurden bisher von Fernseh-und Rundfunkanstalten wie NDR, WDR, Deutscher Welle,Deutschlandfunk, Radio Bremen, Bayerischer Rundfunk und ZDF ausgestrahlt.
Heute gastiert Birgitta Wollenweber international als Solistin und Kammermusikpartnerin. 2002 gründete sie das Solisten-Ensemble Berlin.
Ihr Repertoire umfasst Werke sämtlicher Epochen. Ihre umfangreiche Diskographie beinhaltet u.a. viele wiederentdeckte Komponisten wie Julius Weismann und Carl Loewe, Georg von Albrecht, Salomon Jadassohn und Joseph Joachim.
Sie lebt seit 1994 in Berlin und folgte 2003 dem Ruf als Professorin für Klavier an die Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler Berlin".
Seit Juni 2014 ist sie 1.Prorektorin und Fachgruppenleiterin Klavier (head of piano faculty) und seit 1.September 2014 amtierende Rektorin der Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin (acting rector)
