He is a singer/songwriter and acoustic guitar player--sometimes labeled a rock/pop artist--who lives and records in Spokane, WA. He began writing songs at the age of 12, when he got his first used guitar. He grew up in the small town of Colville, WA, located 60 miles northwest of Spokane. Growing up on a farm, he listened to Lifehouse, Coldplay, The Fray, Future of Forestry and many other artists. After getting tired of playing covers of other bands, he began pursuing a more creative approach and started working on a more personal sound. Writing songs that were spontaneous and "from the soul" became second-nature for Mikheyev, as he developed a strictly ad hoc approach towards music. Work on his freshman release The Coffee Shop began in 2010, when Mikheyev got in touch with Jimmy Hill, the owner of Amplified Wax Recording and Design Studio. The first track recorded was an acoustic version of "Love You to Death," the song that his mom loved most and encouraged him to record. Throughout the years, Mikheyev polished his sound, with the help of Jimmy and other musicians, creating a unique sound that broke standard rock/pop boundaries. Some of his melodies can be classified as acoustic, whereas others combine the smoothness of violins and acoustic guitars riding on the waves of mellow electric guitar. He'd like to think of himself as an acoustic pop artist who writes crescendo-filled songs with a rock edge. Listeners have compared his sound to Lifehouse, Jason Mraz, Mat Kearney, Brendan James, and Minus the Bear. His first album The Coffee Shop is due to come out sometime in 2013.
The name Brother Monk was originally intended to simply be "Monk," due to his fascination with monks and their peaceful and unique lifestyle. However, Joshua A. Novajosky (the violinist on the track "You") suggested that "Monk" sounded like a hard rock band. Mikheyev added the prefix "Brother" and the name sounded very warm, fuzzy and "homie" immediately. And so it stuck.
During the summer of 2011, Mikheyev and Novajosky partnered up and recorded the song "You," which was written by Mikheyev a few months earlier. They met while working as nurses at Sunshine Gardens, a nursing facility. After the recording and a performance of "You" at a wedding, they each went their separate ways. That year, Mikheyev decided to pursue a career as a solo artist, realizing that this was his best option at the moment, as not many musicians were willing to stick around and invest time into band practice and recording. With the support of a number of local musicians and audio engineers, Mikheyev continued crafting love songs--and is still in the business today!
