The Uglies have earned residencies at several venues in the Mid Atlantic region, and have been spreading their sound at live shows around the country since 2009. Their music and popularity has organically spread throughout the East Coast, and 2011 and beyond will see Bumpin’ Uglies touring new cities around the nation, spreading their trademark laid back yet precise live performances. The Uglies have the mettle to carry the torch of the reggae/ska/rock genre into the future; to be the band that builds its own success simply by delivering memorable music from their souls; music which listeners can relate to and fully embrace.
Bumpin’ Uglies released their debut LP, Free Candy, in June of 2011. Not since Sublime was selling 40 oz. to Freedom out of the back of their van has an independent LP surprised the listening public with such well-crafted and prolific sounds. Free Candy dares to feel accessible and raw in a rootsy sense, with real, sparkling talent and versatility giving the entire album excellent shape and allure throughout. Lead singer and song writer, Brandon Hardesty proudly claims that, “Free Candy is music for people with real lives and real problems. Most of the songs are based on experiences I’ve had throughout my twenties, so I think there are themes in the songs that most people can relate to.”
Island Time

Nothing to do today but it ain't borin'
Shoes on and I'm out the door
Take a run along a foggy shore
Pot of coffee, fill my cup
Pack a bowl and spark it up
Take a bike out to the rock
Swim until my legs are shot
These are the days
Put me back on island time
I need that state of mind
Island time, where everything's slow
Put me back on island time
We can ignore the grind
Island time, where we take it slow
Oh oh
Sunset. Hit the cottage to clean up
Crack open a bottle of the hard stuff
Pre-game then we're out the door
Start a fire on a moonlit shore
Crack a beer and throw it back
Listen as the ocean crashes
Call the crew and hit the bar
Or fall asleep while counting stars
These are the nights
Put me back on island time
I need that state of mind
Island time, where everything's slow
Put me back on island time
We can ignore the grind
Island time, where we take it slow
Oh oh
Only alarm clock that's ringin' is the fog horn that's singin' to me
Only thing I am planning is a nap in the hammock at three
Savor the scene because we're livin' the dream
'Til it's back to reality
Put me back on island time
I need that state of mind
Island time, where everything's slow
Put me back on island time
We can ignore the grind
Island time, where we take it slow
Oh oh, oh oh
The lyrics to Bumpin Uglies' "Island Time" paint a vivid picture of a day spent in a carefree, island state of mind. The singer describes waking up to a peaceful sunrise, with nothing to do but enjoy the moment. They take a run along a foggy shore, enjoy some coffee and marijuana, then swim until exhaustion sets in. Throughout the song, the singer longs for the sense of ease and relaxation that comes from being on island time - where everything is slow, and there's no rush to be anywhere or do anything.
The second half of the song describes an equally leisurely evening, with the singer and their friends enjoying drinks by a fire on the beach, listening to the crashing waves and soaking up the beauty of the night sky. They may hit up a nearby bar, or simply fall asleep under the stars. Regardless of the activities, the theme of the song is clear: the singer wants to be transported back to the peace and tranquility of island time, where there's no real pressure or stress.
Overall, "Island Time" is an anthem for anyone who's ever been on vacation and wished they never had to leave. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a life unencumbered by time and responsibility - a life where all that matters is enjoying the present moment.
