From a young age, he exhibited a talent for singing and was influenced by various musical styles while growing up as the only child of a single parent in a troubled household. His challenging upbringing led him to leave home at an early age. Struggling to maintain steady employment, he turned to music, playing guitar and writing songs while performing in nightclubs along the East Coast during the mid-1980s.

Carlton’s popularity as a club singer eventually allowed him to open for several country music celebrities. In the late 1980s, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he continued to pursue his music career. However, his troubled past continued to haunt him and struggles with severe alcohol abuse often resulted in hospitalizations and periods of homelessness.

In 2004, Millhouse Records released an EP titled “Blame it on the Blues,” marking one of his first significant releases. His subsequent album, “Just This Side of the Blues,” featured ten original songs and received three stars from AllMusic. His third album, “Somebody Get Me My Guitar,” also earned three stars and was submitted for Grammy Award consideration. The lead single from this album, “The Way My Daddy Done,” reached #1 on the Cashbox Indie Country Charts in January 2008. A compilation album titled “The Best of Buzz Carlton” was released in 2008.
