The name itself conjures images of the quintessential cereal commercial: a beautiful morning with the sun dancing on the kitchen countertop where a pitcher of milk and bowl sit beside a huge box of Cherry Cornflakes. Upon taking your first spoonful, you are jolted by the sweet burst of cherries and the crunch that those cornflakes pack. There's also an innocently naughty touch about the choice of fruit: a symbol for something bashful yet ripe for the picking.
The band is just that: a group of carefree young musicians that pack a punch when they play. Bassist Archie Simangan, guitarist Enjo Servanez and drummer Jed Dayrit make the powerful mix, while vocalist Cherry Simangan is, well, the sweet cherry that sits among these cornflakes.
Cherry Cornflakes is best known for its remake of Three O'clock's On Paper from Galaxy Records and Jam 88.3's acoustic compilation Jam and Jive. They came out with their first album, "Calorie Free" last August 2005. Most of these reflect a certain lightheartedness despite the range of mood, from the brooding Butterfly to the rebellious Margarita. Songs like Wordplay, I Crush U and Time Is Up show that though cherries are sweet, this one's a tough cookie (or cornflake).
They are soon to come out with their second album which they describe as their "rebirth". Cherry Cornflakes have certainly come a long way. After experimenting, they have come out with their distinct sound which is uniquiely rock based. They have grown more powerful, More intense, More mature, More Soulful and yes, very effective. Their new songs are based on personal experiences which anybody can easily relate to.
From their first singles- Paraiso, which was a nostalgic trip back to childhood, It's over, a very simple yet catchy reggae song. Season's Change, Over you, You're not mine, Boogieman, are just some new songs you have to look forward to. Cherry Cornflakes is definitely one band that will give you goosebumps.
This is proof that a dose of Cherry Cornflakes provides infectious energy in the morning, and at night, can send you to dreamland with visions of sugarplums dancing in your head.
