Getting their hands dirty in an evocative junkyard of memories, these five multi-instrumentalists reemerge with an eclectic sonic palette infused with a warm blend of local dialect and esoteric literary references. Their almost theatrical compositions combining the immediacy and untamed emotion of a heart-rending folktale with free-spirited imagination.
It’s like sampling filtered through a human heart instead of CPUs. Kerouac colliding with Tuareg chants, heartbroken anti-fascists fighters, enchanted same-sex couples and so much more – all to talk about the present, beyond words.
Who is Collettivo Ginsberg?
Collettivo Ginsberg was born in 2004 as a literary-musical project by Cristian Fanti and Andrea Rocchi.
The line up changes over the years, with Andrea ultimately having to relocate to another Italian region to become a young father – and leave the band.
The current line up comes together in 2011 and radically changes the way CG makes music. The initial ties to the music of Tom Waits, Nick Cave and the beat generation gradually leave more and more ground to jazz and blues explorations from Alberto Bazzoli (piano/organ) and Eugenioprimo Saragoni (drums/percussions) – with a blues album released together in 2009 for Crotalo Records, and their musical education sought from local blues legends to the Music Conservatoire in Ferrara (Italy), Istanbul, Umbria Jazz and beyond.
Gabriele Laghi (Doublebass) brings Balkan and folk sensitivities from his time with Albanian conductor Bardh Jakova, whilst Federico Visi (guitars, synths) throws in the mix a wealth of musical knowledge from his studies at the prestigious International Piano Academy of Imola and the International Music School of Milan – after having studied privately both in Olso (Norway) and Italy – and music composition for video and interactive media, including work for international charities (i.e. Norwegian People’s Aid).
However, Collettivo Ginsberg wouldn’t exist without the inspired vision of Cristian Fanti – poet, songwriter, visual artist – who keeps this pulsating bundle of inspiration together and moving…
In late 2011 they close themselves in a studio with 80s no wave underground legends Confusional Quartet’s keyboard player, Marco Bertoni, reemerging this year with 15 new tracks that they are now hitching to show to the world.
2012 is treating them well so far, with the opportunity to open Italy’s biggest festival & conference of independent labels (MEI – Supersound) at Teatro Masini in Faenza, several warm up gigs across Northern Italy and Norway (Oslo – Cafe Mir on 1st July and Nystua – Nystuafestivale on 30 June), plus the chance to support Confusional Quartet in their comeback performance in Modena on 29 November.
This is just the beginning though. Their first EP was released to critical acclaim on 19 November by London’s Seamount Productions and they have just secured funding through a crowdfunding campaign to release their debut LP, Asa Nisi Masa in October 2013.
