Ik denk nog vaak aan kleine Sjaak
Groot in 't kattekwaad
Vlug als kwik, de held, de schrik
Van de buurt en onze straat
Spijbelaar, altijd klaar
refr.
En ieder ging z'n eigen weg
En Sjakie word soldaat
Voor miljoenen en voor Sjaak
Kwam de vrede veel te laat
Z'n zoontjes zijn precies als hij
Half lief en half piraat
De 1 heet Sjors, de ander Sjaak
Toe, maak ze geen soldaat
refr.
Een ruit kapot, dat was een schot
Van Sjakie van de hoek
Tekst/muziek: J.Strunk/H.P. den Boer
The lyrics of Conny Vandenbos's song "Sjakie van de hoek" reminisce about a mischievous and daring young boy named Sjaak, who was known as the terror of the neighborhood and the hero of his street. The refrain reflects on Sjaak's antics of skipping school, stealing cookies, and breaking windows, which earned him both admiration and fear from his peers. Despite his activities, Sjaak had a heart of gold and always made sure to visit his lonely grandmother daily.
The song takes a poignant turn as it speaks about Sjaak joining the army and how the war came too late for him, leaving behind two sons who resemble their father's nature - half loveable and half rogue. The final line of the chorus reminds us of Sjaak's legacy as a troublemaker who was loved and missed, "A broken window, that was a shot from Sjaakie in the corner."
The lyrics of the song are a familiar tribute to the archetype of the small-town hero who never forgets his roots. Sjakie van de hoek is a bittersweet reflection on the passing of time and the beloved memories of youth.
