Spector's genius with the productions, besides his deft handling of the instrumental support, was to provide fills with strong doo-wop riffing from an R&B vocal group, The Halos, to produce two classic rock 'n' roll tunes.
Without Spector's guiding hand however, the hits simply dried up around 1968.

Pretty Little Angel Eyes
Curtis Lee Lyrics
Pretty little angel eyes
Pretty little angel eyes
Pretty little angel, pretty little angel
Pretty little, pretty little, pretty little angel
(Ba bom) oo oo, oo oo (ha ha ha ha)
Oo oo, pretty, pretty, pretty little angel eyes
Angel eyes, I really love you so
Angel eyes, I'll never let you go
Because I love you, my darlin' angel eyes
(Pretty, pretty, pretty little angel eyes)
Angel eyes, you are so good to me
And when I'm in your arms you be so heavenly
You know I love you, my darlin' angel eyes
(Angel eyes, bom bom bom bom)
I know you were sent from Heaven above
To fill my life with your wonderful love
I know we'll be happy for eternity
'Cause I know
That our love is really real
Angel eyes, I really love you so
Angel eyes, I'll never let you go
Because I love you, my darlin' angel eyes (angel eyes)
Pretty little angel eyes
Pretty little angel eyes
Pretty little angel, pretty little angel
Pretty little, pretty little, pretty little angel
(Pretty, pretty, pretty)
(Angel eyes) angel eyes, I really love you so
Angel eyes, I'll never let you go
Because I love you
My darlin' angel eyes
(Pretty, pretty, pretty little angel eyes)

Thank you so much for the story and a bit of real history, I hope you are well.
This song meant so much to me as a teenager in the 80s, when all around me was music such as Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, which wasn’t really my thing. So I guess I was a little lonely too, surrounded by an era of music that wasn’t for me. I did my own bit of antisocial behaviour by blaring this track out really loud in my car at the time, along with others from the best era of popular music 😄😄.
It may have been futile at the time but I got proved right, because this music has stood the test of time! Helped of course with the Internet introducing it to a new audience.
I went from the UK to America one summer in the 90s and managed to get on a local radio show called ‘The Bop Shop’ WSUL Radio Monticello out in the Catskills, New York State. I sang on the air, a Skyliners number, just me and my guitar and a guy came down the block to see who was the guy from England singing. It was Larry Chance of the Earls. Not many absolutely unknown singers can say they had a major star come out to see who was singing 😄. What a cool guy! And thankfully he’s still around, his birthday is in two days, 19th October.
Rest in peace Curtis Lee and thanks for the great music!

Curtis Lee was a friend. 1959-60. I was playing bass in a band, The Ramrods, at The La Jolla Club in Tucson, where Ray Peterson had just closed a one week run as guest star. Andy Gaydos, the sax player, and I talked owner, Al Winecke, into bringing Curtis out from Hollywood. Andy and I drove all night after Saturday night's show and picked him up and drove back to Tucson. Fortunately, Peterson and his manager Stan Schulman had not yet left town. We went to their motel and told them about Curtis and invited them to our Monday night show. We barely had time to discuss what songs we would play much less rehearse. We played a set then brought him to the stage. Not only was Curtis a great singer but he had THE LOOK. Great hair, muscular build, captivating smile, and moves that were as unique as Presley's. Shulman and Peterson were blown away and invited him to New York to record and build his act. He did a couple rock and roll bus tours but decided it wasn't his thing. We called him from California during Christmas and he sounded very lonely in his New York hotel room and wished he was back on the west coast. I just read that he had passed. I was intending to go to Yuma this winter to hang out with him for a while. I guess we shouldn't put off the important things. Kenny Laursen

Hey ams! Thanks for your nice comment. It seems like yesterday and then so long ago. The ride in Andy Gaydos' Pontiac from Hollywood to Tucson with the three of us in the front seat could have been a scene from a movie. We all shared stories and laughed and I recall Curt talking about a terrible job he had picking cantaloupes one hot Arizona summer when he was a young guy. As I remember, and may wrong, but when we picked him up that early morning, he was roomate with Donnie Brooks, another friend who has passed on. I believe they were working parking cars in Hollywood. Donnie was a great guy also and we were able to get him a couple weeks at the LA Jolla also before he hit with Mission Bells. Curt would have been 83. I am 80. It goes quick when you're having fun. Just lost another friend this year. Sandy Nelson, Teen Beat, a killer drummer to the end.

So sorry you lost your friend, Kenny.

What a belter this track is. So sad to hear that Curtis died a while ago with cancer. One of the underestimated singers of the 1960s. RIP
