The members of this fun and entertaining band are Rafe Morris (guitar and vocals), Toby King (drums), Patrick Kennedy (bass) and Sam King (guitar, trumpet, flute and vocals).
This Canberra based band formed in 2003 and has gone on to achieve, and even surpass, their most extravagant dreams. Dahahoo launched their first CD 'Jim And The Haircut' in 2004, and continue to write and arrange a strong repertoire of smooth, danceable original tracks. Launched at the 'Toast' club in March 2004, Jim And The Haircut features thirteen original tracks fusing solid jazz, funk and reggae rhythms spiced with the rich flavours of flamenco, calypso and Cossack music. The Dahahoo blend is served with humour, energy and an irresistible dance beat. The band will be heading back into Blind Monkey Studios soon, and hope to release their new CD in 2006.
Dahahoo have featured in some of the best Canberra gigs over the past two years. They have played in such events as the Multicultural Fringe Festival, National Folk Festival, and National Youth Week, as well as some of the most popular venues in the ACT. Dahahoo have built a strong following of fun-loving fans, and are one of the most popular bands in Canberra. This youthful and talented band have also drawn positive acclaim from music critics.
"Dahahoo seduce anyone within earshot - party songs that incite dance floor mayhem, tight improvised jams compliment endearing staple numbers, and their charming neo bohemian appearance. This all combines to attract an ever growing, relentlessly loyal fan base, and a slew of satisfied punters wherever they play." - Alistair Erskine, BMA Magazine, InTheMix.com - 2005
The Dahahoo style is pretty hard to pin down. It has been described as everything from "progressive funk" to " California smooth jazz and ska" and "funky rhythms with Eastern European melodies and lyrical prowess". The band has no quarrel with any of these descriptions. They have a wide range of musical tastes and their creative writing and blend of styles has become a distinctive Dahahoo sound.
By working in the studio owned by band member Sam King, Dahahoo have been able to take complete control of the recording, engineering and design of their CDs. The band wants listeners to experience the same music on CD that they would hear at a Dahahoo gig, and re-live the same energy and excitement of hearing Dahahoo live. But what does the name mean, you ask... what ever you want it to mean.
