Civilization
Danny Kaye With The Andrews Sisters Lyrics

Each morning, a missionary advertises neon sign
He tells the native population that civilization is fine
And three educated savages holler from a bamboo tree
That civilization is a thing for me to see

So bongo, bongo, bongo, I don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no
Bingo, bangle, bungle, I'm so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go
Don't want no bright lights, false teeth, doorbells, landlords, I make it clear
That no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here

I looked through a magazine the missionary's wife concealed (Magazine? What happens?)
I see how people who are civilized bung you with automobile (You know you can get hurt that
way Daniel?)
At the movies they have got to pay many coconuts to see (What do they see, Darling?)
Uncivilized pictures that the newsreel takes of me

So bongo, bongo, bongo, he don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no
Bingo, bangle, bungle, he's so happy in the jungle, he refuse to go
Don't want no penthouse, bathtub, streetcars, taxis, noise in my ear
So, no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here

They hurry like savages to get aboard an iron train
And though it's smokey and it's crowded, they're too civilized to complain
When they've got two weeks vacation, they hurry to vacation ground (What do they do, Darling?)
They swim and they fish, but that's what I do all year round

So bongo, bongo, bongo, I don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no
Bingo, bangle, bungle, I'm so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go
Don't want no jailhouse, shotgun, fish-hooks, golf clubs, I got my spears
So, no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here

They have things like the atom bomb, so I think I'll stay where I "ahm"
Civilization, I'll stay right here!

Let me set the mood:

You are going to go do that mission that a farmer told you to do, and you come across a gang of super mutants. Just when you are about to fight them, this song comes on.
You are determined.
You hear this song over gun shots and muffled screaming.
You defeated them, and your walking into the sunset with the song still playing, filling you with emotions you haven’t felt playing a video game.
And when you feel that,
Your playing a good video game.
Your playing Fallout 4.

@AwesomeDoge34 Excellent comment!

Just to pitch in the discussion - I feel there's really no need to put one point of view as a polar opposite of another. The song's original purpose was indeed to criticize the seemingly civilized ways of a western lifestyle. That much can be read from the lyrics. 👍

What I feel was said - and which with I agree - is that the way in which the male-singer portrays the tribal is simplified and generalizing to a racist extent. The singing tribal i given off as this pseudo-african-indonesian-southamerican-whatever-tribal who only eats coconuts, fishes and swims all year round, like a true NPC - and not really a individual with ambitions, thoughts beyond Bingo Bango Bongo and civilization being intimidating or bad. But all of this is not stated outright, it's just in the subtext. And as a far wiser than me AwesomeDoge mentioned, it was a different time in which this was not considered inconsiderate.

And yeah, I wouldn't burn anyone on a crazy witchhunt for social justice here, but it does make a better world to understand why this might strike a off-key note for some, like, in a small way it did for me. Still like the song though.

But yeah, thanks Doge. And to copy you shamelessly - I'm out asweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllll

I am Norwegian, living in Norway. I am born in 1947, and as I get older, I remember old songs from my childhood. This melody was translated to Norwegian and was very popular in the 50- ies. So nice to hear it again ! So glad I found it !

Skinny Buddha

That's absolutely amazing and beautiful and I wish you and your family happiness and wealth. Blows my mind how kids/adults 75 years after you were born absolutely love this song because of a game. The modern US term would be, "this song is a straight banger" meaning this song is really good and gets you excited. Thanks for your comment
