Hang Me Oh Hang Me
Dave Van Ronk Lyrics

Hang me, oh, hang me, I'll be dead and gone.
Hang me, oh, hang me, I'll be dead and gone.
I wouldn't mind the hanging but the laying in the grave so long
Poor boy, I've been all around this world.

I been all around Cape Girardeau, parts of Arkansas
All around Cape Girardeau, parts of Arkansas
Got so goddamn hungry I could hide behind a straw
Poor boy, I've been all around this world.

Went up on the mountain, there I made my stand
Went up on the mountain, there I made my stand
A rifle on my shoulder and a dagger in my hand
Poor boy, I've been all around this world.

Hang me, oh, hang me and I'll be dead and gone.
Hang me, oh, hang me and I'll be dead and gone.
I wouldn't mind the hanging but the laying in the grave so long
Poor boy, I've been all around this world.

Put the rope around my neck, hung me up so high
Put the rope around my neck, hung me up so high
The last words I heard them say: "Won't be long now 'fore you die"
Poor boy, I've been all around this world.

Hang me, oh, hang me and I'll be dead and gone.
Hang me, oh, hang me, I'll be dead and gone.
I wouldn't mind the hanging but the laying in the grave so long
Poor boy, I've been all around this world.

Hang me, oh hand me
I'll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh hang me
I'll be dead and gone
Wouldn't mind the hanging
But the layin' in a grave so long, poor boy
I been all around this world

I been all 'round cape Gigardeau
Parts of Arkansas
All around cape Giradeau
Parts of Arkansas
Got so god damn hungry
I could hide behind a straw, poor boy
I been all around this world

Went up on a mountain
There i made my stand
Went up on a mountain
There i made my stand
Rifle on my shoulder
And a dagger in my hand, poor boy
I been all around this world

So hang me, oh hang me
I'll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh hang me
And i'll be dead and gone
I wouldn't mind the hanging
But the layin' in a grave so long, poor boy
I been all around this world

Put the rope around my neck
And hung…

I was lucky enough to have seen him at The Gaslight Cafe back in, I don't know, '67 or '68. He was truly unforgettable.

You were sure at the right place at the right time. How rare. Such sweet grace.

The last time I saw him was on bleeker, I was walking to grand street to do a comedy open mike. I had an hour so I sidled in. He was at the bar with his wife sipping wine, a jolly good fellow, and then stood up ,got on stage and delivered the best set I’d seen him do and I’ve seen him three times. Took a leak next to him at the chessmate in Detroit.

I never found this song depressing, I think it’s a bit limiting to the artist to view it in such a way. I think it’s more of a celebration of a life lived, taken too soon - with a tinge of sadness and nostalgia for the west. Someone in the comments below said it was written based off of a much older ballad called ‘I’ve been all around this world’ which was about an outlaw that was captured and hanged. Whenever I hear this song I think about my times out west, the sprawling rust-colored mountains, the dust of the desert, the lush and verdant valleys. I find it very endearing that Dave says he’s been “all around this world” and then goes on to list a few relatively discrete areas. The west, the desert is the whole world for him.. I think Dave recognized the poetic quality of a life lived in such simplicity.. he speaks with such clarity and conviction.

When I first heard the news I'd be homeless, this was the first song I listened to. Those were some lean times, but I got by. Now Im two years clean and Im holding down a good job. Lifes a funny old thing.
