A few years later he received a choral scholarship Wells Cathedral school, where he sang in the Cathedral choir. From the age of nine he learned drums and percussion and spent the next ten years playing in various orchestras and band.. He went on to study jazz in Chichester and then attended film school in Newport, Wales.
In 1988 he began working for 'Films At 59', a Bristol-based post production sound company, where he became a film dubbing mixer using a variety of 'state of the art' digital sound and music systems. His musical background was soon to change his career direction as he was offered several commissions by the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol to score for documentaries. His musical approach appealed to directors as his experience with sound mixing gave him a distinct advantage when it came to judging the effect of the compositions within the completed sound tracks.
Since the early 90s David has written numerous BBC, ITV and Channel 4 documentary and commercial scores, one most notable for is the annual UK nature program Springwatch.
He is frequently commissioned by American film makers such as: National Geographic, Disney, Discovery, Animal Planet, and WNET New York, to name but a few. His music on the National Geographic/PBS series Africa was also released separately and has become an acclaimed soundtrack album.
He has recently been approached by Mandalay Pictures in Los Angeles about music for their latest feature film, an area that David is keen to develop. He has written for many musicians including Andy Sheppard, Will Gregory (Goldfrapp), Adrian Utley (Portishead), Stuart Gordon, Peter Gabriel and Peter Hamill. David also works with a variety of ethnic musicians who help to enhance the many different scores he is involved with.
