Other Alabama piano players -- Pinetop Smith, Charles 'Cow Cow' Davenport, Walter Roland, Bobby Mizzell, Avery Parish, Sun Ra -- were among his earliest influences. He played his first gig in 1957, backed Big Joe Turner in the early 60s, and later toured with Lavelle White, Jimmy T99 Nelson, and Floyd Dixon, with whom he performed boogie-woogie duets. After moving to the Pacific northwest and co-leading the Paul deLay Band for a number of years, he began touring with Northwest Pianorama and with his own band.
