Afro Blue
Dee Dee Bridgewater Lyrics

Dream of a land my soul is from
I hear a hand stroke on a drum

Shades of delight cocoa hue
Rich as the night, afro blue

Elegant boy, beautiful girl
Dancing for joy, delicate whirl

Shades of delight cocoa hue
Rich as the night, afro blue

Two lovers dance face to face with undulating grace
They gently sway then slip away to some secluded place

Shades of delight cocoa hue
Rich as the night, afro blue

I saw Dee Dee Bridgewater in SF on 13 December 2014 and she did Afro Blue.  I must say this 1974 recording stands the test of time and is STILL by far my favorite performance of Afro Blue!

Addy Yarbrough

good to know, she is STILL performing, kudos to her

My two favorite vocal versions of this tune are this one and Dianne Reeves'.

Reynaldo Rivera

An honorable mention 2 Esperanza Spalding & Robert Glasper covering it in a slower, softer version of it @ the American Jazz Festival a few yrs back.

Anyone who grew up before this age of instant gratification, will enjoy the emotional build-up of true jazz singing!

I'm soooooo glad this is on YouTube. Dee Dee's version of Afro Bue is tops IMHO; it speaks to me. Dee Dee was so young when she did this one. :-D Thanks! aquarianrealm

I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS and the duet with RAY CHARLES, UNBELIEVABLY MAGNIFICENT!

Saw her at Universal Studios in Hollywood in the 1970s... She was gorgeous back then. Did not realize this predated Erykuh Badu and Robert Glasper's version. Great instrumentals on here...
