Sound was characterized by the geometic precision of Mark Makowski's (Glitter Express) kinetic dance-oriented rhythms, Thomas Jefferson Walter's fragmented and primitively atonal guitar, and the incomprehensible, vaguely demonic vocals of Teysha Garrison, who was 17 years old when the band formed; the bass (performed by Dylan Thomas Walter [[artist]Byproduct, Use Value]) occupied a more prominent role than is typical in rock genres, acting as lead instrument, with an unorthodox mixture of dissonant angularity and distinctive catchiness. Occasional short bursts of spastic, frenzied saxophone were another hallmark of the band's instrumental profile. Short-lived though it was (the band only had 9 or 10 shows to its credit when they parted ways after a short year of existence), Dinner & the Maincourse left its mark on the Portland punk scene, and its members have all continued creating music in bands/projects such as Use Value, Terraform, Law of Falling Bodies, Gorgon Zoloft, The Process of Elimination, Smoke Rings, Sorry for Laughing and others.
