Upon the band's formation, they released one extended play (EP) in 2007, titled This Is Your Way Out, and shortly after, the group underwent significant line-up and sound changes, dropping their metalcore influence and leaning towards a more rock sound. The band released their debut studio album, Relativity (2008), which featured vocalist Jonny Craig and rhythm guitarist Jonas Ladekjaer. Their second studio album, Emarosa, was released in June 2010, to critical acclaim, and was Craig's final album with the group.
Following Craig's departure, the band toured briefly with a fill-in vocalist before entering a period of inactivity. Eventually, Craig was formally replaced by Walden. Emarosa then released their third studio album, Versus, on September 9, 2014, which peaked at No. 61 in the Billboard 200. The band signed to Hopeless Records and released their fourth and fifth studio albums, 131 (2016) and Peach Club (2019). A sixth, Sting, is set for release in January 2023.

The Past Should Stay Dead

For once this dirt won't come all off
It can't be pushed aside
The wind is blowing through closed doors with shadows
Dancing in the hall
Now hit the floor
Crawl to the side
We've all made better moves
Despite the slowing of our feet
For once lets leave the dreaming
To someone else
Our time has slipped away
We're sinking faster, faster, no more play
Get ready for the catch
I'm at the next step
Waiting for a year
All at once
It leaves you breathless
With next to nothing but open hands
Reach out, hold on tight
I know it hurts but keep trying
And with your luck this won't be over quick
Out of the blue it strikes you
What's left to catch but the fear of letting go?
(The fear of letting go)
I'm biting down
The stress gets harder now
The mood is let down
Let it play for the last time
Take this last second
For once don't be so weak
Back up the feelings that you claim now
Fall deeper into a world
That you can't explain
For once don't be so weak
I see the mistake and it's you
Don't try another line
I know the truth
And let it save you when
Nothing else will
I will let it save you when
Nothing else will
(Let It Save You)
The mood is let down,
Let it play for the last time
Take this last second to know
We know who does it best
Wind is blowing through closed doors with shadows
Dancing in the hall
Now hit the floor,
Crawl to the side,
We've all made better moves
Despite the slowing of our feet
Let hate save you
When nothing else will
I know the truth
It won't save you
The lyrics to Emarosa's song "The Past Should Stay Dead" seem to be about letting go of past mistakes and moving on from them. The song starts off with the lines "Tailored sheets to fix this dirty bed, for once this dirt won't come all off" which suggests that they are trying to fix something that they've messed up before but are not having much luck with it. They then continue with "It can't be pushed aside, the wind is blowing through closed doors with shadows dancing in the hall" which implies that they can't ignore what has happened in the past and it haunts them. The next lines, "Now hit the floor, crawl to the side, we've all made better moves despite the slowing of our feet" seem to be urging them to keep moving forward despite the difficulties they face.
The chorus of the song is a call to action to let go of the past and not rely on dreams to fix things. They sing "For once let's leave the dreaming to someone else, our time has slipped away, we're sinking faster, faster, no more play, get ready for the catch, I'm at the next step waiting for a year." This suggests that they need to stop dreaming about fixing things and take action before it's too late. They then continue with "All at once, it leaves you breathless, with next to nothing but open hands, reach out, hold on tight, I know it hurts but keep trying" which implies that it's a difficult process but it's worth it to try and move on from the past.
The rest of the song seems to be more of a call to take responsibility for their own mistakes and not rely on others to save them. They sing "For once don't be so weak, back up the feelings that you claim now, fall deeper into a world that you can't explain" which suggests that they need to take control of their own lives and feelings. They then sing "I see the mistake and it's you, don't try another line, I know the truth and let it save you when nothing else will" which seems to be saying that they need to be honest with themselves and let the truth save them.
