Etta Jones
Etta Jones (November 25, 1928 – October 16, 2001) was an American jazz singer whose critical success and relative commercial obscurity (she never had a hit record) earned her a reputation in her lifetime as a "jazz musician's jazz singer".
She is noted for her elegant interpretations of standards, ballads, and blues. Her characteristic inflections have sometimes prompted comparisons to stylistic devices employed by Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. If I Had You
Etta Jones Lyrics
I could show the world how to smile
I could be glad all of the while
I could change the grey skies to blues
If I had you
I could leave the old days behind
Leave all my pals, I'd never mind
I could start my life all a new
If I had you
I could climb the snow capped mountains
Sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert
If I had you by my side
I could be a king, dear, uncrowned
Humble or poor, rich or renowned
There is nothing I couldn't do
If I had you
I could show the world how to smile
I could be glad all of the while
I could change the grey skies to blues
If I had you
I could leave the old days behind
Leave all my pals, I'd never mind
I could start my life all a new
If I had you
I could climb the snow capped mountains
Sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert
If I had you by my side
I could be a king, dear, uncrowned
Humble or poor, rich or renowned
There is nothing I couldn't do

Her tone. Geesh. I think I just found a new voice to add to my library. Her name came up in an article I just read and I wanted to hear what she sounded like since I had never heard of her. Glad I followed my instincts. She should be way more popular.

A wonderful voice ----she deserved more credit ---- a superb vocalist

@TheKoolkanadian You are so right; Both Billie Holiday and Etta James had drug and alcohol problems that negatively affected their voices, but when asked, they would always sing when they probably should have quit, but money talks loudly! Etta Jones COULD have traveled the world, so could Shirley Horn, but both these great singers preferred to work in smaller groups for smaller audiences. Good taste can call for that often!

M.J. Leger So well-stated. Agreed. She brings me joy, her wondrous sound. Sort of like if Billie Holiday could've carried a tune. No offense, folks, but Billie was more famous for her troubles than her voice. Being honest. #EttaJones was a #Songstress, an #Intrepreter of the highest caliber. Much Love. ❤🎤

Murp h So true! 💕❤️👍🏾

I hope she knows, wherever she is up there, that we love her incredible voice and presentation of a song, she deserved that recognition long ago, but didn't get it. She's been found and enjoyed once again.

The great Etta Jones who didn't get the recognition she deserved because she was often confused with Etta James, (Etta Jones is by far the better singer), great talent and worked with some of the best in her time, they all wanted to work with Jones, but I think my favorite she worked with (for 30 years) was the superb sax player, Houston Person.

One of the very best vocal versions I've heard.

Όταν ακους αυτές τις φωνές, έχεις την εντύπωση, πως τίποτα κακό δεν πρόκειται να συμβεί.
