(The Flying Hamsters of Doom) have sharply honed their own distinctive sound. Now, with their newest self-release, My Great Escape (March 2008) the band shows it has continued to distill it's sonic identity within each of the CD's treasure trove of songs. Liberally seasoned with progressive hooks, grooves, complex rhythms, and melodies, the F.H.O.D. sound also combines drum work in the vein of Rush and Tool, bass playing schooled in the spirit of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, guitar work that conjures inflections of Alterbridge, Soundgarden, and Led Zeppelin, and last - but hardly least - formidable vocals (and a fiercely charismatic stage presence) that are reminiscent of forebears like Skunk Anansie and Tori Amos. Not surprisingly, then, F.H.O.D. (KK-Vocals, Tom Howell-Guitars, Dimitri Kontos-Bass Guitar, Jason Stiltner-Drums) have already achieved considerable acclaim on the hometown Chicago Live music scene: "Whether you're into operatic vocals or explosive guitar riffs, 'My Great Escape' is an album worth throwing into your music library'-Bernie Gaye (Freelance) "They are even better than their amazingly fantastic name"- Arhythmius for Female Front. "This embryonic band have burst on to the scene in a wave of commotion and a revolutionary blaze of wonderful noise, loaded with an armful of well crafted songs that generates the angst of one woman on an exploration with her band"-Esther Montagne for Extraplay.com "This female-fronted Chicago band unleash rock with visceral conviction. Dynamic arrangements, metal guitar roar, and KK's soaring vocals make for an intoxicating mix. -Don Thomason for Amplifier Magazine. Indeed, My Great Escape even further advances F.H.O.D.'s dark, hypnotic journey with a group of tales at once fraught with treachery, yet also filled with hope. There's a dynamic, passionate element to each of songs that is riveting, along with imaginative, evocative imagery that will incite each listener to immerse ever more deeply into the entrancing F.H.O.D. world. From the epic song of survival in "Against the Odds," to the melodic shimmer of 'In My Shell," and "State of Mind," and the upbeat tempos of "False Prophet," "Kings and Queens," and "Unashamed," My Great Escape is subtle yet bombastic, highly personal yet universal, enchanting yet chilling, heavy and brutal -- yet vulnerable and ethereal. Moreover, with My Great Escape F.H.O.D. heavily hints at it's own explosive live stage intensity and mastery, while also striking a compelling balance between the primordial power of the masculine force and the beguiling gravity of the feminine essence. With it's modern sound mixed with an old school feel, skilled musicianship, powerhouse vocals, and world class compositions and arrangements, My Great Escape has all the earmarks of the breakthrough album for this auspiciously gifted Chicago band.
