Born in 1976 in Seville, Spain to a Syrian father and a Palestinian mother,… Read Full Bio ↴Born in 1976 in Seville, Spain to a Syrian father and a Palestinian mother, Fahmi Alqhai has become one of his generation's leading interpreters of the viola da gamba. His musical education began in Syria, where he lived for 11 years. Back in Spain, he was a self-taught musician until he entered a conservatory in Seville. He continued his studies at the world-famous Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Basel, Switzerland) and Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (Lugano, Switzerland).
His solo career took off in 1998 as he specialized in the German repertory for viola da gamba, especially the sonatas for viola da gamba and clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach.
With the soprano Mariví Blasco he co-founded the Accademia del Piacere, which specializes in music of the Italian Seicento (17th century). He and his brother Rami Alqhai created the record label ALQHAI & ALQHAI. In 2009 Fahmi Alqhai was appointed director of Seville's early music festival, el Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla (FeMAS).
